KWED Freedom Fiesta set for Friday night; Food truck festival, live music, beer booth on tap for celebration

(Seguin) — Seguin Radio KWED is gearing up for the return of Freedom Fiesta. Families are encouraged to mark their calendars for this year’s Fourth of July celebration in downtown Seguin. The event will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, July 2 in downtown’s Central Park.

KWED General Manager Darren Dunn says after being forced to cancel last year’s event due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the radio station is proud to once again bring the tradition back to Seguin. Dunn admits that leading up to this weekend, planning for the event has been difficult. He says while Freedom Fiesta won’t have all the components as in the past, it will be offering something special and unique to the downtown gathering.

“We try not to focus on what we won’t have, and instead talk about the big opportunity that we are giving to Seguin to come together again. People are eager to be able to safely gather and have a good time. That’s exactly what we will do during Freedom Fiesta. The music will be great and come hungry. Our food truck festival is a new piece to Freedom Fiesta. People are going to want to try everything, because there will be a huge variety to choose from. I’m talking some really good eats — everything from barbecue to Cajun to Chick-Fil-A. We added the food truck festival component because we wanted to add something new, but it’s also the safest way for us to get people fed during the event. I’m really excited about what we have to offer,” said Dunn.

Dunn says he is especially excited about this year’s live entertainment featuring Clint Taft & the Buck Wild Band. He says the band is known for its great music and for bringing people together.

“Clint and his band are the perfect act for our Independence Day weekend celebration. They will play all the music that you love, and maybe add a twist or two. They’ve performed for us before, and each time they nail it. People are so happy to hear them play. Especially this year, because — again people want things that provide them comfort. Clint Taft & The Buck Wild Band will do just that,” said Dunn.

In addition to the food truck festival and live music, the radio station will again be partnering up with members of the Knights of Columbus who will again be hosting this year’s beer garden. Dunn says he especially thanks this year’s sponsors for helping to put on the Fourth of July celebration. He says it truly takes a community to put on this event and again is thankful to those who are helping to welcome it back.

“When we took over Freedom Fiesta — about a decade ago, we made a commitment to focus on the local people and to make sure this would always be a free event. So, it’s important that we recognize the sponsors for the events. These are companies that are making a difference in our community and stepping in — at this time — to help us get back to normal. This sponsor list includes First Commercial Bank, Texas Lutheran University, Nissan of New Braunfels, Tres Hewell Mortuary, GRMC, First United Bank, CMC Steel Texas, Tri-County AC & Heating, Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union, GVEC, and Tiger Sanitation. Their support keeps the Freedom Fiesta tradition alive in Seguin,” said Dunn.

KWED’s Freedom Fiesta jump starts this year’s three day Fourth of July celebration in Seguin. The event will be followed on Saturday with the annual flag raising at 9 a.m. and the Biggest Small Town Fourth of July Parade at 10 a.m. The annual Fireworks Fiesta will wrap up the day on Saturday at 9:30 p.m. This year, KWED has partnered with the city of Seguin to provide patriotic music that is choregraphed to go with this year’s fireworks show. You can listen on AM 1580 KWED or by clicking the listen live button at SeguinToday.com. Holiday events will conclude on Sunday, July 4 with the final Central Park Concert featuring patriotic music by the San Antonio Symphonic Band.

All events including Friday’s Freedom Fiesta are free.
