City of Seguin IT Department earns Dual Honors at recent conference

(Seguin) — When it comes to technology, the city of Seguin is on point and that’s all thanks to its IT team.

The City of Seguin’s IT Department was recently honored with an Excellence Award and a President’s Award during the 2021 Texas Association of Governmental Information Technology Managers (TAGITM) conference held in Austin.

The awards were presented by the TAGITM Board of Directors as part of its annual conference awards ceremony.

Excellence Award recipients are selected for demonstrating outstanding innovation and application of leading-edge computing or communication technologies. Winners are chosen by a committee of peers who judge nominated projects based on their impact on improving internal operations, providing exceptional customer service or enhancing communications.

Seguin’s IT Department received the 2021 TAGITM Excellence Award for a two-year comprehensive effort to upgrade the city’s radio infrastructure, a project that culminated in 2020. Among the numerous
enhancements introduced was the implementation of a new weatherproof radio facility housing a 700 MHz P25 compliant phase II radio system. The radio system provides widespread radio coverage and heightened communication between agencies.

This endeavor resulted in the City of Seguin joining a regional consortium of 70 tower sites to enhance public safety, utility coverage, and support for approximately 160,000 citizens in the region. Along with the purchase and deployment of 235 handheld, mobile, and base station radios, Seguin 911 Dispatch also received a full upgrade as part of the project.

Shane McDaniel, City of Seguin’s IT Director, was also honored with the prestigious TAGITM President’s Award. The award is presented at the discretion of the President to a member that has made an exemplary and lasting contribution to Texas local government technology and the organization.
