Throwdown fitness, healthy living event slated for Friday night in downtown Seguin

(Seguin) — Downtown Seguin is getting a little sweaty tonight as Elevation Fitness hosts its first Central Texas Friday Night Throwdown.

The event, being hosted by one of downtown Seguin’s newest businesses, will be shutting down a portion of the corner street to better feature the teams of two as they compete in the calorie-burning grit contest.

Since it is a Friday, free beer and music will also be added to the mix of competition for those participating.

Lauren Martinez and Carlos Moreno, who operate Elevation Fitness, say they are excited to host the downtown event.

“It’s an event where all gyms come out together,” said Martinez. “Each gym hosts a Friday Night Throwdown at their gym. You go and you compete, you have fun, there’s vendors there. Ours, in particular, will be here at Elevation Fitness. We will have a DJ, you know, just to keep spirits high and everything fun.”

The contest consists of WOD (workout of the day) style events and will require teammates to tag-team eight rounds of exercise with a 14-minute time cap. Competitors will tackle assault bikes, shuttle sprints, and more with an assortment of prizes on the line for the winners.

Elevation fitness opened in February, right in the middle of the pandemic, to help the community mitigate underlying health issues, which worsened the virus’s impact on individuals.

“We’ve always been health-mind, health-conscious types,” said Moreno. “We love cross-fitting and kind of watching this thing progress. Me and my partners when there wasn’t ways to go out, we had our own thoughts just like everybody else did about what was going on and how to prevent it and what people should do, but you know, as more data started to come out, it was stated that 94 percent of the deaths had occurred were people who had underlying conditions – obesity, heart disease, diabetes, all of which we knew were preventable by eating right and exercising, sleeping right, those kinds of things.”

With quarantine just now coming to an end, people have been stuck at home, and for some, physical fitness may have taken a backseat while adjusting to life in lock down.

“With COVID happening this past year, everybody being isolated at home, I think it’s more than ever going to be a great time to come out,” said Martinez. “If you want to be a spectator, I think it would be awesome just to gather with the community and see what we’re about not only on a day to day basis but when it comes to competing and really challenging our members to step outside of their comfort zone and see where they are after all the hard work they’ve been putting in since February when we opened.”

Helping to serve a free pour of beer and pizza to competitors will be the Seguin Brewing Co which operates just around the corner from Elevation Fitness located at 112 W. Court St.

A portion of Camp Street will be closed for the outdoor competition. The contest is set to begin at 5 p.m. Friday.
