Gates open at new Matador Stadium for first ever graduation ceremony

Rodriguez Elementary School Music Teacher Joseph Cantu captured this final photo of former Rodriguez students, now Seguin High School seniors, who stopped by their former elementary school on Wednesday for a look back at how it all started. Students graduate Friday night at Matador Stadium.

(Seguin) – A new chapter in history is expected to be written as seniors prepare for the first graduation ceremony in Matador Stadium. Not only will Seguin High School seniors graduate in a new stadium, but they will do so on a Friday night, a change from the annual Saturday night ceremony.

Seguin High School Principal Dr. Hector Esquivel says he is grateful that the stadium was finally completed this past fall – giving this batch of seniors and the Seguin community something new.

“Actually, more than anything, we are the excited to be the first class to graduate at the new Matador Stadium. We are also anxious to see how it goes. I don’t anticipate any issues but just seeing how it goes I
think is the main thing,” said Esquivel.

Esquivel says if there was ever a class more deserving, it is this Class of 2021.

“There’s 458 students that I would proudly present to the community of Seguin as the graduates of Seguin High School. I’m very proud and excited about that. A lot of these students, I don’t know exactly what number, they actually completed their studies while they were remote. So, that really is very unique in that they had been remote pretty much all year and have been able to keep up with their studies and they have been able to participate as much as they can in as a normal environment as we can provide even though they are remote. Obviously, the other situations that we were talking about earlier in the year just the different events that happened like having to close down the school due to COVID and then having to close the school down due to weather. They’ve experienced it all, COVID, Snowvid, you name it and through it all, they persevered and here they are on the verge of graduating Friday night,” said Esquivel.

Esquivel says although many safety restrictions have been lifted, the high school will still conduct the ceremony with a limited capacity.

“We did offer the tickets out early in the spring, 10 tickets per family. Obviously, families are eligible to ask other families if they have other tickets. Originally, we were looking at still trying to do some type of social distancing — although now that a lot has, we are still going to keep the same number of tickets, however, we will open it up if they want more tickets. They would probably have to contact somebody else in the senior class that is not using them and still be able to sit together as a family,” said Esquivel.

Leading the class is this year’s Valedictorian Rose Ellen Robertson and Salutatorian Kassandra Ortiz.

The graduation ceremony gets underway at 8 p.m. Friday in Matador Stadium. The ceremony will be live streamed. A link for that ceremony will be made available on the Seguin ISD and Seguin High School Facebook pages.
