Sydni Stevens named District MVP, Panthers place 10 on 27-4A softball award list


(Geronimo) – Navarro softball standout Sydni Stevens was named the Most Valuable Player in District 27-4A to lead a list of 10 Panthers who received post-season accolades in a vote by the district’s head coaches.

Stevens, a junior shortstop, hit .541 with seven home runs, 13 doubles, three triples, 37 RBIs, and 33 runs scored this spring.

Sophomore outfielder Samantha Mundine and freshman infielder Kaislynn Tovar shared the District Offensive MVP award.

Mundine hit .518 with a home run, 15 doubles, 27 RBIs, 13 stolen bases, and 36 runs scored. Tovar finished her first season of varsity softball with a .418 average, three home runs, eight doubles, 37 runs scored, and 30 driven in.

Sophomore pitcher Samantha Wegman was named the District Devensive MVP. She went 24-7 with a 3.52 ERA.

Navarro’s First Team All-District selections include senior catcher Haleigh Ortiz, sophomore infielder Melina Tabares, sophomore outfielder Laylin Sturm, and junior designated player Mary Gilliam.

Ortiz hit .413 with four home runs and 29 RBIs. Tabares put up a .295 average with 25 runs and 14 RBIs.

Sturm posted a .553 batting average with four home runs and four triples, drove in 14, stole 14 bases, and scored 26 times. Gilliam hit .300 and scored 12 runs.

Sophomore infielder Sarah Howard (.343, 2 HR, 23 R, 23 RBI) and junior outfielder Berklee Andrews (14 putouts, 3 outfield assists, no errors) landed on the All-District Second Team.

The Panthers went 24-7, won the District 27-4A championship, and advanced two rounds to the area bracket of the UIL playoffs in 2021.
