(Seguin) — Some new data shows that the economy is picking up in the city of Seguin. City Finance Director Susan Caddell says people are spending, and the city’s sales tax revenue is way up.

“Great news on sales tax. March, we were up by 26 percnet, almost 26 and a half percent. That puts us up for the year by 6.28 percent and $942,000 is the highest that the city has seen in a monthly sales tax
payment and this is not just us. It’s across the state. Across the state, they have been seeing large increases. I got the report from the state today and I was kind of worried — did we get a big audit payment or something, becuase we have gotten big audit payments before but the only audit payments that we got for this month was $1545 so all this is truly atributed to sales,” said Caddell.

Caddell says not only are people spending in local stores, but guests are again coming back to stay in local hotels. Caddell says the city hotel-motel occupancy tax numbers are also increasing. She says it’s
still down overall for the year, but the numbers are going up again.

Caddell made her comments as part of a financial update during Tuesday’s meeting of the Seguin City Council.
