Drowning victim identified

Seguin, TX, USA / Seguin Today

(Seguin) – An autopsy has been ordered on a body that was recovered Wednesday night on area waters. The victim has since been identified as Jason McCoy, 47, of Midland.

Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Investigations say at around 1:30 p.m., the sheriff’s office received a call to the 1100 block of Reiley Road for a missing person on the Guadalupe River.

Sgt. Kelly Mann says McCoy was apparently operating a kayak when family members witnessed him go beneath the water’s surface.

“Mr. McCoy did not resurface. At 6:21 p.m., divers located Mr. McCoy within the river under the water’s surface,” said Mann.

Mann says recovery efforts were a team effort made possible by various agencies.

“Members of the McQueeney Volunteer Fire Department, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department – Texas Game Wardens, Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office Drone Program, Seguin Fire Marshal’s Office Drone Program, the Texas Department of Public Safety Aviation Unit, and the New Braunfels Fire Department Dive Team responded to the area for additional search and rescue efforts,” said Mann.

McCoy was pronounced dead by Guadalupe County, Precinct 4, Justice of the Peace Todd Friesenhahn.

Although an autopsy is being performed by the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office, Mann says preliminary investigation appears the death of McCoy was “a tragic accident and not the result of criminal activity.” The investigation is still ongoing.
