(Seguin) — Whether it’s a job right after graduation, a job during
college or a place to comeback home to after receiving that college or
technical degree, local high school seniors had plenty to choose from
during Wednesday’s Seguin Career Day. Seguin Career Day held on the Seguin High School Campus opened its doors to high school seniors from not only Seguin but from Navarro and Marion High Schools. The event featuring a variety of employers from
throughout the area was hosted by the Seguin Economic Development Corporation.
SEDC officials say for years, Seguin employers have reported a sizable gap between the talent that they need to keep growing their businesses and the talent they can find. Over the past couple of years, the Seguin Economic Development Corporation has collaborated with existing industry, local school districts, and other economic development partners to try and close the skills gap and create a stronger talent pipeline.
They say the Seguin Career Day is just one more way to help close the skills gap by bringing employers and students together.
Seguin High School Senior Trinity Guardiola was among those shopping around for her future. Guardiola, who maybe sees the Air Force or becoming a pediatric nurse practitioner in her future, says planning has to start somewhere.
“It definitely gives me a lot of options to see what I can do and plan
it out farther. It helps me consider all the possibilities,” said Guardiola.
Navarro High School Senior Denim Clark says she was pulled over to
Guadalupe Regional Medical Center (GRMC) booth. She says at this
point, she’ll consider any and all options to gain experience toward
her future.
“I thought it was a good way to have students find out what they want to do in life. But I already know what I want to do. I want to be like a nurse or a travel nurse. The hospital is here so definitely for the summer. I think about getting a job as a phlebotomist but I feel like this is a good way to have all the students get an idea of what they want to do in the future instead of not knowing,” said Clark.
While he looks forward to being an electrician, Navarro High School
Senior Zeke Campos says Wednesday’s Career Day was a good place for a lot of his friends to be.
“I kind of have an idea of what I’m going to do after high school but
for my peers, I think it’s a great thing. These companies are
gathering together to help people in high school who maybe don’t know what they want to do and they just come and introduce themselves and put their companies out there,” said Campos.
Twenty employers from Seguin participated in showcasing their
company’s operations and career pathways to students. Among those was Nick Guenther, the director of workforce development for United Alloy (UA). Guenther says his company appreciates the opportunity to help create a vision for a student’s future.
“It gives us the ability to get some exposure because we are new to
the area. It gives us the ability to learn what talents are out there
and what ability we can provide for them for a future, for their
career paths as well as letting them know where they will need to go
to school and what talents that they would need to bring to the table
to be a potential employee of ours,” said Guenther.
Rick Bough, the director of career and technical education for the
Seguin ISD says they appreciate the chance to work together with the SEDC and look forward to the positive outcome this event will have for all students, local industry, and the community.
