Schultze no-hits Tivy in Seguin’s fourth straight district win, Friday game vs. Buda-Johnson to air on KWED
(Kerrville) – Seguin freshman Madyson Schultze pitched a no-hitter to help the Matadors win their fourth consecutive District 26-5A softball game Tuesday night, 3-1 over Tivy in Kerrville.

Schultze struck out six Antlers, and the only run she allowed was unearned as the result of a Seguin error.

Ashlie Aguilar, Mia Cevallos, and Vanessa Sanchez each drove in a run. Cevallos, Allie Mize, and Allie Kubena each scored once. Mize went 2-4. Layla Salazar doubled.

The Matadors are 7-4 in district play, 12-10 overall, and carry a four-game winning streak into Friday’s home game against Buda-Johnson.

Seguin sits in fourth place in the district standings, 1.5 games back of Johnson, who enters Friday with a 9-3 district mark and a 14-6 overall record. The Matadors fell to the Jaguars 9-1 on March 12 in Buda.

Friday’s game will air live on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com. The first pitch is slated for 7 p.m. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:45.

Early lead slips away from Matadors in road loss to Patriots
(San Antonio) – Seguin baseball looked poised to end a four-game slide in District 26-5A Tuesday night with an 8-1 lead after four innings, but San Antonio-Veterans Memorial rallied back to hand the Matadors a 9-8 road loss in 10 innings.

The Patriots erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the sixth to tie the game. Seguin had two runners on base in the seventh and the bases loaded in the tenth, but couldn’t drive in the go-ahead run.

Veterans Memorial’s Julian Roxas singled in Jalen Garibay for the winning run in the bottom of the 10th.

Drew Burnett, Tim Belicek, and Heston Osborne each went 2-5 at the plate for Seguin. Burnett and Osborne each drove in a run. Micah Rodriguez notched an RBI and scored twice.

Cory Mazzurana doubled and drove in a run. Tristan Moreno recorded a base hit, scored three times, and stole two bases.

The loss drops the Matadors to 2-7 in district play, 6-15-1 overall. Seguin hosts Kyle-Lehman at ‘Smokey’ Joe Williams Field on Friday at 7 p.m.

Tovar’s big night fuels Navarro softball in district opening win
(Geronimo) – Kaislyn Tovar drilled a three-run homer and finished 3-4 with five RBIs and two runs scored to help Navarro open the District 27-4A softball schedule with a 15-5 thumping of La Vernia in five innings on Tuesday.

“She’s a good ballplayer, and she’s been struggling a little bit hitting lately, so she snapped out of it tonight at the right time, and glad to see it,” Navarro head coach Darrell Harborth said of his freshman second baseman. “She’s an exceptionally good softball players, and tonight she showed it.”

Tovar’s home run and a two-run single by Haileigh “Bear Ortiz” higlighted a six-run second inning that gave the Panthers an early 8-0 lead over the Bears. Sam Mundine doubled in Laylin Sturm and came home on a Sydni Stevens single for the first two runs in the opening frame.

La Vernia broke loose for four runs in the third and another in the fourth to claw back in it and whittle Navarro’s lead to four runs, 9-5.

The Panthers responded with two runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth to activat the 10-run rule and end the game early. Tovar singled with two outs in the fourth and scored on a triple by Sarah Howard. Howard sprinted home on a base hit by Sam Wegman.

Sturm scored on an error in the fifth, Mundine crossed the plate on a Stevens double, and Tovar smoked the walk-off double to drive in Ortiz and Stevens.

Wegman worked around five runs on nine hits with three walks to earn the complete-game win in the pitcher’s circle. She held the Bears scoreless in the first, second, and fifth innings.

Sturm, Mundine, Ortiz, and Stevens each had multi-hit games. Sturm scored three times and stole two bases. Mundine, Ortiz, and Sevens each scored twice, while Ortiz and Stevens each drove in two. Wegman recorded an RBI. Melina Tabares had a base hit and scored twice.

The Panthers pounded out 14 hits on an exceptionally gusty evening.

“Winning this first one against who probably was considered the team to compete with us for the district championship, you know it’s good to get one here at home,” Harborth said. “I was just pleased with how we hit the ball, and hitting the ball the other way with this wind like that was fun to see.”

Navarro (14-6, 1-0) continues district play Friday with a 7 p.m. home game against Cuero.

Harborth fans 11 in Marion shutout of Cole
(San Antonio) – Konner Harborth tossed a three-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts in seven innings Tuesday night as Marion moved to 6-0 in the District 26-3A baseball race with a 5-0 road win over San Antonio-Cole.

Jake Burris went 2-3 with a double and three RBIs to lead the Bulldogs at the plate.

Ryken Autry finished 2-3, drove in a run, and crossed the plate twice. Ty Blake also drove in a run. Jayden Williams doubled and scored once.

Marion (14-6, 6-0) chases its seventh straight district win Friday evening with a 7 p.m. first pitch in Luling.

Jones spins no-hitter, Marion softball routs Cole
(Marion) – Kira Jones threw a no-hitter Tuesday evening to help Marion softball stay undefeated in District 26-3A with an 11-1 home win over San Antonio-Cole in six innings.

Jones struck out seven and worked around seven walks to limit the Cougars to one run.

Jaslyne Williams went 3-3 with a solo home run and three runs scored to pace the Bulldogs offensively. Peyton Smith-Velasquez went 3-4 and scored three times. Lily Bek produced a triple, two RBIs, and three runs scored. Kylie Balderas and Alyana Robles each drove in two.

Marion is 6-0 in district play, 9-11-1 on the season. The Bulldogs hit the road to face Luling on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

TLU baseball wins fourth straight with 8-2 road win over Concordia Texas

(Austin) – The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs won their fourth straight with an 8-2 non-conference victory Tuesday over Concordia Texas.

The Bulldogs improved to 14-7 overall. Concordia dropped to 9-6.

Bulldog senior outfielder Tyler Cauley moved into second place on the TLU Baseball all-time home run list with his 34th career homer.

Cauley hit a solo home run in the second inning. The homer moved Cauley past TLU Hall of Famer Aaron Crais on the TLU home run list. Aaron Merhoff is the TLU career leader with 51.

Cauley went 3-for-4 against the Tornados, and he scored two runs.

Holden Philippus also had three hits and added a run scored and two RBI.

Caleb Maly walked three times and had a hit, and Cullen Motsinger had a hit and two walks and a run scored.

Joe Jimenez drove in two runs and had a hit and a run scored.

Ten different TLU pitchers combined to hold Concordia to four hits. The Bulldogs struck out 12 batters and worked around nine walks.

Matthew Hickey (3-0) notched the pitching win with an inning of work. He struck out a batter and did not issue a walk or surrender a hit.

TLU heads to Irving, Texas for this weekend’s Saturday-Sunday three-game series with the University of Dallas. The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series begins Saturday with a noon doubleheader. The series concludes Sunday with a single game that starts at 1 p.m.
