(Seguin) — Your elementary school child might just find themselves at a whole new campus this coming school year. The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees unanimously voted to change the elementary school enrollment boundaries for fall of 2021. Last month, the school district officially unveiled the newly drawn maps for each of its seven elementary schools.

Sean Hoffmann, the chief communications officer for the Seguin ISD, says the new maps are way overdue and are expected to better distribute student numbers across the district.

“We have not changed our boundaries for 10 years and with the current and expected growth that we are going to realize in Seguin, it’s time to get those boundaries changed. It’s time for us to get word out to our parents this month to let them know where their children will be attending school this fall,” said Hoffmann.

Currently, elementary school enrollments range from 285 to more than 500 students. Officials add that the largest impact will be at Koennecke Elementary School. The new shift in attendance zones is expected to decrease the enrollment at that campus by almost 100 students.

Hoffmann says it’s been 10 years since the district was forced to redraw those lines. He says thanks to growing pains, those lines will continue to see changes.

“That’s kind of where we are. Going in, we knew that our parents, we wanted them to be patient, we wanted them to be understanding that hey, these are growing pains. As a community grows, this is something that we are going to have to look at and we may be looking at it again in four or five years. Fast growth districts change school boundaries every two or three years and we understand that our parents and students love the school that they are attending. That’s great. That’s awesome. I mean we couldn’t ask for anything better than that. However, there are going to be times where we are going to have to shift those enrollments in order to balance all of our enrollments across our campuses and to accommodate for that growth,” said Hoffmann.

Hoffmann again notes that having to go to a new school is not always favorable nor easy for families. He says although they can request a transfer to their school of choice, those requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis and not confirmed until after school registration.

“You know parents always have that option to submit a transfer and when we send letters out to our elementary parents here in the next several weeks to let them know where their child will attend, we will also have that transfer information on there. Granted, we are going to look at each transfer on a case-by-case basis. If we grant every transfer request that we receive, we are going to be back to square one. We are going to be back to where we are now where we have imbalances in enrollment and instances in which we’ve got campuses that are beyond their capacity,” said Hoffmann.

District officials say there is still plenty of desks throughout the elementary schools in the Seguin ISD – 800 to be exact. The problem, however, is not more space but the need to equalize the enrollment numbers that currently exist. Those enrollment numbers at the elementary schools currently range from 285 to more than 500 students.
