GCCAC to support month long Champion for Courageous Children fundraiser

(Seguin) — The Guadalupe County Children’s Advocacy Center is looking for a few good teams – teams consisting of friends, co-workers, families, churches, or businesses willing and ready to raise money for abused and neglected children here in our community.

As part of its 2021 fundraising efforts, the children’s advocacy center is signing up teams for its first ever Champions for Courageous Children fundraiser.

Christy Williams, the executive director for the children’s advocacy center, says the effort is to raise money for the non-profit organization which has experienced a negative impact due to COVID-19. Now although funds did not pour in like normal, the center still service 720 children in Guadalupe County in 2020.

“It is an all-online event unless people individually are doing things in person or otherwise the event itself is an overarching event where we are asking people to actively participate in fundraising efforts for the center. So, they are becoming a champion for Courageous Children by either creating a team and asking people to help fundraise with them, making a goal and fundraising toward that goal or by donating towards the event and most importantly by sharing information about this event and about what the advocacy center does and about Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention because it is over the course of the month of April,” said Williams.

Williams says the idea is to have teams set and ready to begin fundraising on April 1. She says all efforts to help the advocacy center reach its $100,000 will be appreciated.

“It’s also really similar to people who do and ask on Facebook. So, Facebook often, when your birthday is coming, they say hey, do you want to raise money for a local non-profit or a non-profit that you care about so you can then through Facebook, say ‘for my birthday, I would like people to make a donation towards the Guadalupe County Children’s Advocacy Center. What they do is really important to me and their mission is something that is close to my heart so will you please raise money towards my birthday for this organization?’ It’s really similar to that. It’s really similar to Relay for Life where people make teams, and they have to do something. For this event, you don’t actually have to go walk the laps, you can just make teams to reach that fundraising goal,” said Williams.

April, of course is Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month. Williams says for a community to have a child advocacy center is still relatively rare. She says the center helps to interview children all in one place – ultimately preventing the child from having to repeat their pain over and over again to law officers, prosecutors and other professionals ready to help.

“April is Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month. It’s the one month every year that we try to draw as much information and attention to the problem of child abuse in our community. Child Abuse exist. Nobody wants to talk about it. But it does exist and it’s important that they know what to do if they suspect abuse. They can call law enforcement, or they can call the 1-800 hotline number for child abuse in Texas which is 1-800-252-5400. The thing that is really important to know about this is it is not your job as someone who is concerned about a child to investigate that concern but it’s everyone’s job to share their concerns so that it can be looked at so that kids can be talked to – that things that are concerning to me can be looked into and that children can be given a voice in the process,” said Williams.

Williams says signing up a team has been made easy. She says everything you need to know is available on the center’s website.

“People can go to our website gccac.net. There’s an event page there that gives them all the information about the event so if they want to be a team leader, they want to have a team and work towards different goals, you’ll see an event shirt, and there’s some swag that goes along with all of this and that kind of fun stuff so they can go and look at all that. They can also click there to navigate to an actual event page. There are already donations that have been made. Donations don’t have to be made April 1 but April 1 is our official kick-off to the event, but people can go in and either make their own team or join a team or make a donation or just help share the word,” said Williams.

Williams says she looks forward to folks participating and can’t wait to see the innovative ideas that they come up with to help the county’s most vulnerable children.

“There’s no donation too small. We’ve had groups of kids raise pennies. They’ve put their pennies towards a donation. Every donation goes toward the overall goal of the event and there’s absolutely no donation too small,” said Williams.

Again, those looking to get started in becoming a team of Champions for Courageous Children are asked to visit gccac.net. They may also email gccacinfo@gccac.net for assistance.
