Seguin baseball competes in San Marcos tourney
(San Marcos) – The Matadors finished up the non-district portion of the 2021 baseball season last week with three losses and a time-limit tie in the San Marcos tournament. Seguin fell to Killeen-Ellison 6-5 on Thursday, came up short to Steele 7-4 and San Marcos 7-5 on Friday, and tied San Antonio-Antonian 7-7 on Saturday.

Micah Rodriguez turned in a productive weekend at the plate, finishing 5-12 with a double, a triple, five RBIs, and three runs scored over the course of the four games.

Drew Burnett drove in four runs and scored twice. Cory Mazzurana went 6-14 with a home run, two doubles, and three RBIs. Heston Osborne drove in two runs. Tristan Moreno went 5-14, scored twice, and drove in run.

Julien Valdes, Rodriguez, and Tim Belicek put in solid work on the mound. Valdes pitched five innings without giving up an earned run, allowed four hits with no walks, and struck out four. Rodriguez gave up three runs (one earned) with five strikeouts and three walks in six innings. Belicek surrendered three earned runs on six hits, struck out two, and walked five in 5-2/3 frames.

The Matadors (5-9-1) host Kerrville-Tivy in a District 26-5A contest at Smokey Joe Williams Field this Thursday at 1 p.m.

Navarro softball posts 4-2 tournament record in San Marcos
(San Marcos) – The Navarro softball team wrapped up its tournament schedule with a 4-2 finish in San Marcos last Thursday – Saturday.

The Panthers shut out Lufkin-Hudson 6-0 and fell to San Marcos 7-4 on Thursday, defeated Austin High 7-4 and doubled up Austin-Akins 6-3 on Friday, and split Saturday’s games with a 10-3 loss to Austin Bowie and an 8-4 win over San Antonio-Cornerstone.

Sydni Stevens missed the cycle by a single against Hudson on Thursday, going 3-3 with a home run, a triple, a double, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Sarah Howard and Carlie Pitner each drove in a run. Howard went 2-3. Sam Wegman tossed a four-hitter and struck out eight in five innings for the win. Kaislyn Tovar drove in two against San Marcos. Melina Tabares collected two hits, an RBI, and a run scored. Berklee Andrews went 2-2 and scored once.

Stevens doubled twice and drove in three against Austin High on Friday. Haileigh “Bear” Ortiz doubled, scored twice, and drove in a run. Howard belted an RBI triple. Stevens and Sam Mundine each drove in two against Akins. Wegman was the winning pitcher in both games.

Ortiz launched a two-run homer against Austin-Bowie on Saturday, and Mundine drove in a run. Ortiz tripled and drove in two in the win over Cornerstone. Howard collected two hits, two RBIs, and three runs scored. Tovar went 2-3, scored twice, and drove in one. Wegman earned the win after four runs (one earned) on five hits in five innings.

Navarro (10-4) was slated to visit Marion in a non-district game on Monday. The final was not available at press time.

Navarro baseball wins two, drops two in La Grange tournament
(La Grange) – Navarro opened the La Grange baseball tournament with a 4-3 win over New Waverly and a 7-2 loss to Madisonville on Thursday, followed with a 14-4 run-rule win over Waller in Friday’s early game, and finished the even with a 7-3 setback to Madisonville in the finale.

The Panthers trailed New Waverly 3-2 in the middle of the seventh inning. Tristan Brashears doubled in Jaxen Monkerud for the tying run, and Hunter Monroe scored the winning run on an error. Brashears went 2-4, Will Boswell drove in a run, and Monroe earned the win on the mound after 2-1/3 scoreless relief innings.

Mark Wozniak drove in a run in the loss to La Grange, which snapped a six-game Navarro winning streak. Brashears, Aden Supak, and Reece Rojas collected two hits apiece.

Brashears went 3-4, drove in two runs, and scored once in the Friday win over Waller. Sam Muniga finished 3-3, scored three times, stole two bases, and drove in a run. Jaxen Monkerud struck out 10 in five innings to pick up the win, and drove in three runs at the plate. Jacob Frederick and Bryce Nall each tripled, with Nall driving in two.

Supak went 2-2 with an RBI in the loss to Madisonville.

Navarro (11-3) hits the road to face Somerset on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.

Marion baseball completes non-district play in Blanco tourney
(Blanco) – Marion wrapped up its non-district baseball schedule over the weekend with a 2-2 record in the Blanco tournament.

The Bulldogs fell to Blanco 10-2 and Marble Falls 10-7 on Friday, bounced back to edge the San Antonio-Reagan JV 6-4 in the third game, and concluded the tournament with an 8-4 win over St. Anthony on Saturday.

Jayden Williams drove in two runs against Marble Falls. Kallen Bek went 2-3 and scored once. Williams ripped a two-run home run and finished with three RBIs against the Reagan JV. He was also the winning pitcher after allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits with six strikeouts in five innings. Bek doubled and drove in a run.

Marion scored seven runs in the third inning to pull away from St. Anthony in Saturday’s final tournament game. Ty Blake tossed a one-hitter over four innings and struck out five. Williams and Lane Pawelek each drove in two runs.

The Bulldogs (8-5) open the District 26-3A schedule Tuesday with a 7 p.m. home game against Luling.

Jaguars hand Matadors first district loss
(Buda) – Seguin softball came up short for the first time in District 26-5A play Friday night, dropping an 9-1 final to the Johnson Jaguars in Buda.

Taylor Springs drove in Layla Salazar for the Matadors’ only run in the bottom of the first inning after Johnson scored twice in the top of the frame.

The Jaguars plated single runs in the second and third innings, four in the fourth, and another in the fifth to pull away.

Seguin comitted five errors on the night, leading to four unearned runs for Johnson.

Jailey Cardenas, Mia Cevallos, and Graylyn Salazar each went 1-3 at the plate. Springs finished 1-4, Layla Salazar 1-2. Kendall Hurt connected for a hit in her only at-bat.

Hurt pitched three innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits with a strikeout and no walks.

Madyson Schultze worked three frams in the circle as well, giving up six runs (four earned) on four hits and two walks.

The Matadors are 3-1 in district play, 8-7 overall. Seguin hosts New Braunfels-Canyon on Tuesday at 2 p.m.

Marion softball falls to Blanco
(Marion) – The Marion softball team suffered a 15-0 non-district loss to Blanco at home on Friday evening.

The Bulldogs produced six hits, but left all six runner stranded.

Lily Bek went 2-2. Jaslyne Williams, Juliana Loyola, and Kristina Miles each went 1-2. Alexa Ortiz singled in her only at-bat.

Blanco pitcher Cassidy Daves did not walk a batter, and the Panthers only committed one error behind her. Four Marion errors led to five unearned runs for Blanco.

Marion (3-10-1) hits the road for a District 26-3A game against San Antonio-Cole on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
