Matadors go 1-3 in Austin ISD baseball tourney
(Austin) – Seguin opened the Austin ISD baseball tournament with a 9-5 loss to Copperas Cove and a 12-1 setback to Westlake on Thursday, dropped Friday’s first game to Austin-Lasa 11-10, and salvaged a 1-3 weekend with an 11-0 shutout of Manor-New Tech in the Friday finale.
Cory Mazzurana went 6-9 at the plate with four doubles, six RBIs, a walk, and a run scored over the course of the four tournament games.
Micah Rodriguez went 3-8 and drove in three runs.
Tristan Moreno, Eddie Homan, and Nick Carmona each drove in two.
Moreno went 4-12, scored six runs, and stole five bases. Louis Flores added four stolen bases as part of a 2-7 weekend with four runs scored.
Drew Burnett went 3-7 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored. Heston Osborne and Stephen Kent each went 3-11. Kent scored four times, and Osborne drove in a run.
Rodriguez earned the win on the mound against New Tech, allowing two hits with six strikeouts and one walk in four scoreless innings. Tim Belicek pitched six effective tournament innings, surrendering one earned run on seven hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.
Seguin (5-5, 1-0) resumes the District 26-5A schedule Tuesday with a 7 p.m. road game at Kyle-Lehman.
Seguin softball finishes Huber Ranch tourney with 2-4 mark
(Seguin) – The Matadors notched two wins against four losses in their annual softball tournament at Huber Ranch last Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
Seguin opened the tournament with a 2-1 win over Pearsall and an 8-2 loss to Southwest Legacy on Thursday.
The Matadors fell twice on Friday, 3-2 to New Braunfels and 19-0 to Corpus Christi-Calallen.
Saturday produced a 12-0 run-rule win over San Antonio-Providence and an 8-2 loss to San Antonio-Incarnate Word.
Madyson Schultze earn the win in the pitcher’s circle against Pearsall on Thursday, allowing a single run on three hits with six strikeouts and four walks in five innings. Schultze and Vanessa Sancez each drove in a run. Mia Cevallos and Ashlie Aguilar each went 2-2. Aguilar and Jailey Cardenas each scored once.
Layla Salazar hit a home run and drove in Allison Mize in the loss to Southwest Legacy. Salazar and Sanchez recorded Seguin’s only hits.
Aguilar and Cevallos each drove in a run in the loss to New Braunfels. Kendall Hurt pitched four effective innings, giving up one run on two hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Schultze struck out three in two scoreless innings.
Seguin only managed three hits in the the Friday loss to Calallen – one apiece by Aguilar, Schultze, and Graylyn Salazar.
Schultze and Hurt combined to pitch three scoreless innings in Saturday’s run-rule win over Providence. Cevallos drove in three runs. Salazar, Sanchez, and Kubena each delivered two RBIs. Kubena and Mize each collected two hits and two runs scored. Taylor Springs scored twice and drove in a run.
Aguilar and Hurt drove in Mize and Salazar for the Matadors’ only runs in the Saturday loss to Incarnate Word.
The Matadors (7-6, 1-0) jump back into District 26-5A play Tuesday with a 7 p.m. home game against Kerrville-Tivy.
Navarro baseball posts 3-0 record in South Texas Slugfest
(Castroville) – The Panthers used a combination of strong pitching and timely hitting to emerge from Medina Valley’s South Texas Slugfest with a 3-0 record last Thursday and Friday.
Navarro edged Marion 4-1 and Medina Valley 5-3 on Thursday, and closed the tournament with a 1-0 win over Holy Cross on Friday.
Bryce Nall earned the complete-game win on the mound against Marion. He allowed a single run on four hits with a strikeout and no walks in seven innings. Will Boswell and Jaxen Monkerud each went 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Boswell doubled, and Monkerud tripled. Aden Supak drove in two runs.
Monkerud pitched three innings in the win over Medina Valley, allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits with three strikeouts and six walks. Hunter Monroe worked around a hit and two walks to earn the save in two scoreless relief innings. Boswell drove in two runs. Jacob Frederick and Reece Rojas each delivered an RBI, and Rojas went 2-3. Sam Muniga doubled a scored once.
Muniga pitched four scoreless innings and allowed just two hits with three strikeouts and a walk against Holy Cross. Boswell maintained the shutout in two relief frames. Frederick drove in Kaden Monkerud for the winning run in the bottom of the sixt. Boswell went 2-2 at the plate.
Navarro (8-1) hits the road to face Fredericksburg on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Cougars rally late to hand Panthers home loss
(Geronimo) – Navarro held a 4-1 lead after five innings in Friday’s softball clash against 5A power New Braunfels-Canyon, but the Cougars erupted for six runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to hand the Panthers a 9-6 loss in Geronimo.
Sydney Stevens doubled, drove in two runs, and scored once. Sam Mundine, Haley Ortiz, and Mary Gilliam each had an RBI. Mundine scored three times and stole four bases. Laylin Sturm and Kaislyn Tovar each doubled and scored once.
Sam Wegman tossed a complete game in the circle. Only two of the nine Canyon runs were earned. Wegman allowed eight hits, struck out three, hit five batters, and walked four. Four Navarro errors contributed to seven unearned runs for the Cougars.
The Panthers (5-2) host Canyon Lake on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Marion baseball goes 1-2 in South Texas Slugfest
(Castroville) – The Marion baseball team opened the South Texas Slugfest at Medina Valley High School with a 9-5 win over Holy Cross on Thursday before falling to Navarro 4-1 later that day and coming up short to Medina Valley 6-3 on Friday.
Jake Burris went 2-3 with a home run and three RBIs in the win over Holy Cross. Ryken Autry and Chris Mott each collected two hits and two runs scored, and Mott drove in a run. Kallen Bek went 1-2 with a run and an RBI. Jayden Williams tripled and scored once. Ty Blake earned the win on the mound, allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits with five strikeouts and four walks.
Chance Lowery drove in Autry for Marion’s only run in the loss to Navarro. Williams pitched five solid innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
Williams drove in two runs and Lowery recorded an RBI in the loss to Medina Valley. Burris went 2-2 with a double.
The Bulldogs (5-3) play host to Comfort on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
Solid showing for Marion softball in Blanco tourney
(Blanco) – Marion logged two dominant wins, a loss, and a tie over the course of four games in the Blanco softball tournament last week.
The Bulldogs blasted Canyon Lake 16-0 and Ingram-Moore 18-3 on Thursday. Marion came up short to Blanco 15-6 and finished in an 8-8 tie with St. Anthony on Saturday.
Kira Jones tossed a one-hitter in the shutout of Canyon Lake. She also doubled and drove in three at the plate. Alyssa Robles went 2-3 with a double, six RBIs, and three runs scored. Jaslyne Williams doubled and scored once. Alyana Robles and Alexa Ortiz each drove in a run. Robles scored four runs, Ortiz three.
Jones was the winning pitcher against Ingram-Moore as well, surrendering three runs (two earned) on two hits with three strikeouts and five walks in four innings. Ortiz, Alyana Robles, Haley Halter, and Kristina Miles each recorded two hits and drove in two runs, and Robles scored three times. Juliana Loyola drove in two and scored three runs as well. Lily Bek went 2-3 with three runs scored. Jaslyne Williams drove in two, and Alyssa Robles crossed the plate four times.
Bek and Williams each doubled twice and drove in two against Blanco. Bek went 3-3 with a double, a triple, and a home run to go with three runs and two RBIs against St. Anthony. Alyssa Robles drove in three runs.
Marion (3-8-1) hits the road to face Comal-Davenport on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
