Sign-up now underway for food distribution event at Navarro ISD

(Geronimo) — Some much needed food relief is on its way this weekend for families in Guadalupe County. The Navarro ISD is encouraging all families in the area to register for the return of its Rick Martin Memorial Food Distribution. The food event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Navarro Intermediate Campus.

Navarro ISD Superintendent Wendi Russell says the district is teaming up with some good partners to help provide food for anyone who needs it.

“We are excited to be able to work with our county and with the San Antonio Food Bank to be able to offer this food distribution. It’s call the Rick Martin Memorial and Rick Martin was one of our board members and he was highly involved with the community and making sure that all kids are represented. That was his baby was to make sure that we met the needs of all of our kids and all of community members,” said Russell.

Russell says no paperwork is needed to receive food. She says after last week’s storm, the district is preparing for even more families to come out and take advantage of the event.

“It couldn’t have come at a better time in my opinion after this last week of being out with the snow and the ice and people’s reserves of food have run very low and they may not have the money right now to go out and get that food so we are encouraging them to please go online, register. They don’t have to get out of their car when they come through. They just drive right through. Tell us their name. We check them off and then, we load the food for them. They never have to get out of their car for any of it and we want everyone to be able to take advantage of this opportunity,” said Russell.

To ensure enough food, individuals and families are asked to register in advance. Registration is available by scanning the QR code found on the Navarro ISD Facebook page. They are also welcome to call 210-431-8326. Again, the food is available for anyone in need of food assistance.

The school district is also looking for volunteers to help load up vehicles. Volunteers will be needed on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. A sign-up link is also available on the district’s Facebook page. This marks the second time the district has held the food event in honor of late school board member Rick Martin.
