Navarro girls down La Vernia in district opener, push winning streak to 11 games
(La Vernia) – Navarro opened the District 27-4A girls basketball schedule with an impressive road win in a matchup of state-ranked teams, as the Panthers (No. 7 TXHSGBB) held off La Vernia (No. 14 TGCA) 61-51 on Tuesday.
The Panthers led 34-25 at halftime and edged the Bears 27-26 in the second half to notch their 11th straight win.
Tatum Harborth led all scorers 20 points, and Laylin Sturm reached double figures with 14. Sienna Kramer and Berklee Andrews added eight points apiece. Ryanne Hepp chipped in with four, Haleigh Ortiz three, Karlee Koenig and Mary Gilliam two apiece.
Navarro (18-1, 1-0) hosts San Antonio-Christian in a non-district game on Saturday at 1 p.m., and resumes the 27-4A schedule next Tuesday with a 6:30 home game against Pleasanton.
Allen’s 33-point double-double paces Marion boys in dominant district win
(Marion) – Senior guard Easton Allen poured in a career-high 33 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to help the Marion boys basketball team notch a 77-45 home win over Great Hearts-Northern Oaks on Tuesday in District 26-3A.
Allen shot 9-16 overall, 2-5 from three-point range, and 13-16 at the free throw line.
Jon Padron and Samuel Montoya chipped in with 10 points apiece. Montoya pulled down seven rebounds, Padron distributed three assists, and each player had three steals.
Lane Pawelek collected four steals to go with four points and six rebounds. Kadeem Blyden netted nine points and blocked two shots. Dominic Castellanos and Fernando Romero finished with four points apiece, Miguel Aguilar three.
The Bulldogs led 19-8 after the first quarter, 39-24 at halftime, and 57-32 heading into the fourth period.
Marion shot 54.3 percent (25-46) on total field goal attempts.
The Bulldogs are 2-1 in district play, 12-1 overall. They hit the road to face Nixon-Smiley on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Marion girls dominant in district win over Great Hearts-Northern Oaks
(San Antonio) – Marion moved to 2-3 in the District 26-3A girls basketball race Tuesday evening with a 78-12 shellacking of Great Hearts-Northern Oaks in San Antonio.
Three Bulldogs outscored the Griffins by themselves. Jaslyne Williams pumped in 26 points came up with nine steals. Sarah Cook notched a 17-point, 14-rebound double-double and grabbed four steals. Anessa Madrid netted 14 points to go with seven assists and four steals. Molly Rooke also reached double figures with 10 points.
Kaelyn Taylor and Alicia Durbin rounded out the scoring with six and five points, respectively.
Marion jumped out to a 21-2 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. The margin was 39-6 at halftime and 60-8 at the end of the third quarter.
The Bulldogs (4-11, 2-3) host Nixon-Smiley in a district contest Friday at 6:15 p.m.
