(Geronimo) — Sign-up is currently underway for a food distribution event this weekend in the Navarro ISD.
The food drive will be held between 10 a.m. and noon in front of the junior high and central office buildings.
The district will be hosting the community wide food distribution event this Saturday in memory of Rick Martin.
Whitney Magness, the communications officer for the Navarro ISD, says Martin, who served as the vice president for the Navarro ISD Board of Trustees, died unexpectedly in October.
“On Saturday, we are having a Rick Martin Memorial Food Distribution. We have partnered with the San Antonio Food Bank and they are going to be bringing their trucks out there and having food all set up for families to receive – that have preregistered ahead of time but they can also register the day of but it’s easier if they pre-register ahead of time,” said Magness.
Magness says the district just felt that a food drive was fitting for remembering Martin who had served the district for nearly a decade.
“Especially after Rick Martin’s passing, one of his passions was making sure that particularly children never went hungry. He was part of the founding of Panthers feeding Panthers which is something that we have on campus here where students can discretely take home food and snacks and items in backpacks and so it’s very inconspicuous and it really was a passion project for him and his wife and his entire family and all of the people that helped keep it together. Our Deputy Superintendent Luke Morales was actually the first one to reach out to the San Antonio Food Bank and talk to them and get this idea kind of running with what could we do here that could really impact something in his memory,” said Magness.
Magness says any individual or family needing help with food is encouraged to sign up. She says volunteers are also needed to help distribute the food on Saturday morning.
“We are very excited to get this together. We think it’s perfect timing right here, this first weekend of the Thanksgiving break to really make sure that there’s no food scarcities or shortages happening with anyone in the entire community because you don’t have to necessarily be in any type of situation but if you are worried about food at all, that is what this distribution is about in making sure that of course, we care particularly about the children but also the adults of the entire community (that they) don’t go without during this break when they don’t have school meals,” said Magness.
Those wishing to register for the food drive are encouraged to sign up online by visiting the Navarro ISD’s website at nisd.us or by clicking on the link available on its Facebook page. Individuals are also welcome to call 210-431-8326.
