Seguin announces updated 2020 varsity football schedule

(Seguin) – In the wake of the University Interscholastic League pushing back the fall athletics calendar of 5A and 6A schools four weeks, Seguin High School has updated its 2020 varsity football schedule.

The first varsity game at the newly rebuilt Matador Stadium will also be the season opener against Bastrop-Cedar Creek on Friday, Sept. 25.

Seguin will play just one pre-season scrimmage, against Buda-Hays on Thursday, Sept. 17 at Shelton Stadium. The Mats were originally scheduled to scrimmage Austin-Bowie as well, but that scrimmage has been removed from the updated schedule.

The Matadors hit the road for the first time on Friday, Oct. 2 when they visit long-time rival New Braunfels in the Guadalupe River Bowl at Unicorn Stadium.

Seguin’s open date is Oct. 9, followed by a tough test against Kerrville-Tivy at Matador Stadium to wrap up non-district play on Thursday, Oct. 15.

Bastrop-Cedar Creek and Kerrville-Tivy replace San Antonio-Taft and La Vernia from Seguin’s original schedule.

Tivy represents an upgrade in competition from either of those previous opponents. The Antlers went 10-2 and advanced to the second round of the 5A Division II playoffs last season after a 7-0 run to the District 14 championship. They only return three offensive starters and six on defense from last year’s team, but Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine still picks Tivy to finish second in their district this season.

Cedar Creek, also a 5A Division II program, put together a solid campaign in 2019, finishing 5-5.

The new slate also gives Seguin an even split of five home games and five road games, whereas the old schedule had the Mats hosting just four times and travelling six.

After the District 12-5A-Division I opener at home against San Antonio-Veterans Memorial on Oct. 23, Seguin hits the road for two straight weeks to face New Braunfels-Canyon and Harlandale.

The annual Homecoming game is set for Friday, Nov. 13 against San Antonio-McCollum.

The following Friday, Nov. 20, offers the first ever matchup between Seguin and first-year varsity program Buda-Johnson at Shelton Stadium.

Seguin will play an afternoon game at Matador Stadium during Thanksgiving weekend when Kyle-Lehman (coached by former Matador Bruce Salmon) pays a visit on Friday, Nov. 27 for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff.

The Mats finish up the regular season on the road with a short week of preparation against the pre-season district favorite as they visit Dripping Springs on Thursday, Dec. 3.

The UIL football playoffs for Class-5A and 6A schools begin the weekend of Dec. 10-12, and culminate in the state championships at AT&T Stadium in Arlington Jan. 11-12.

The live broadcasts of all Seguin varsity football games will be available on KWED 1580-AM and online at Seguintoday.com.
