(Seguin) — There’s recently been an uptick in the number of COVID-19 cases in Guadalupe County, and some surrounding areas. Seguin City Manager Steve Parker provided the Seguin City Council with an update on the latest (Tuesday) local COVID-19 statistics.

“At the last meeting on June 2, we had 141 cases in Guadalupe County.  We are up to 203 now. We’ve increased cases in the city of Seguin from 24 to 36. Twenty-seven of those have recovered which leaves us nine as of this morning but we just got word that one of those has fallen off. So, we only have eight cases in the city of Seguin. But surrounding communities are seeing an uptick in the number of cases and some of the cases and some of the cases that we have on our list are actually from households where there are multiple people in the household. We have two people hospitalized at GRMC,” said Parker.

Parker says there may be some fluctuations in the city’s numbers based on the reporting. Despite the slight increase, Parker says the change has been more and more gradual than some of the growth in cases that have been reported in some neighboring communities.

“Since June 10, they’ve actually had 25 people test positive for COVID in the 78155 number so there is either some more coming in or there are some in the regional area that is not in the city limits that might make some of our numbers go up in the future but we are doing very very well compared to some other surrounding communities as well — as a lot of businesses in San Marcos, New Braunfels have had to close down because of items like this and having positive cases with some of their businesses,” said Parker.

Parker’s presentation came after the governor made his own coronavirus address earlier in the day Tuesday. Governor Greg Abbott says COVID-19 hospitalizations are rising in Texas but called the increase “manageable.” The governor addressed the rise in cases since the start of the month during a press conference yesterday, stating that some people are not taking proper precautions when it comes to the virus. Abbott said hospital capacity remains plentiful throughout the state and urged Texans to wear masks and practice social distancing.
