Laredo couple headed to Houston apprehended in Seguin for heroin

(Seguin) – A Laredo couple is behind bars in Seguin after attempting to transport more than 14 pounds of heroin through Guadalupe County.

Lt. John Flores, of the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office say the traffic stop was reported on Saturday, June 6 on Interstate 10. He says around noon, Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office K9 Corporal Dustin Crawford initiated a traffic stop on the 2018 Dodge Journey. He says the vehicle was occupied by the married couple and their teenage son.

The couple has been identified as Cesar Mata, 50 and his wife Angelica Mata, 46.

Flores says while interviewing the occupants during the traffic stop, Cpl. Crawford and his K9 Partner “Eddie” became suspicious and requested consent to search their vehicle.

“After receiving consent to search the vehicle, Corporal Crawford subsequently located a large quantity of heroin concealed in a spare battery.  After dismantling the battery, Cpl. Crawford located 14.5 pounds of heroin. The Guadalupe County Narcotics Unit responded to assist in the investigation. After further investigation it was learned that heroin was being smuggled from Laredo, Texas to Houston, Texas,” said Flores.

The couple was arrested and booked into the Guadalupe County Adult Detention Center on charges of manufacture or delivery of a controlled. Their teenage son was not arrested and released.

The Guadalupe County Narcotics Unit is composed of narcotics investigators from the sheriff’s office, Seguin PD Special Crimes Detectives, and Cibolo PD Narcotics Detectives.

The case has been forwarded to the Guadalupe County Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
