(Seguin) – Assuming that the Seguin ISD and UIL calendars for the 2020-21 school year don’t change due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Seguin Matadors’ varsity football schedule for the upcoming season is all set.

The first varsity game at the newly rebuilt Matador Stadium is slated for Friday, Sept. 18 – the District 12-5A-Division I opener against San Antonio-Veterans Memorial.

Seguin will play two pre-season scrimmages on the road, against Buda-Hays on Friday, Aug. 14 at Shelton Stadium, and against Austin-Bowie on Thursday, Aug. 20 at Burger Stadium.

The Matadors open the regular season with consecutive non-district road games. Seguin visits San Antonio-Taft on Thursday, Aug. 27 and heads to Unicorn Stadium for the Guadalupe River Bowl against New Braunfels on Friday, Sept. 4.

From that point, the schedule is a bit unconventional compared to most seasons.

The Matadors’ open date is Friday, Sept. 11. After the first two district games against Veterans Memorial at home and New Braunfels-Canyon on the road, Seguin fills the bye week in the 12-5A-Division I schedule with its final non-district game – a home tilt against La Vernia on Oct. 2.

The Mats play a total of six road games and only four at home during the regular season.

In addition to Veterans Memorial and La Vernia, Seguin hosts San Antonio-McCollum for Homecoming on Oct. 16 and concludes the home schedule against Kyle-Lehman on Oct. 30.

After New Braunfels-Canyon, the Matadors’ district road trips include Harlandale on Thursday Oct. 8, Buda-Johnson at Shelton Stadium on Oct. 23, and Dripping Springs to finish the regular season on Nov. 6.

The UIL football playoffs begin the weekend of Nov. 12-14, and culminate in the state championships at AT&T Stadium in Arlington Dec. 16-19.

The live broadcasts of all Seguin Matador varsity football games will be available on KWED 1580-AM and online at Seguintoday.com.
