County leaders encourage continued practice of social distancing

(Seguin) — Guadalupe County is among the counties around the state that illustrate a possible slow down of the COVID-19 pandemic in Texas.

As Governor Greg Abbott shared earlier this week, reports indicate a plateau of cases and a dip in the number of positive tests being reported each day.

Many, including those here in Guadalupe County, are attributing this change to the results of social distancing which has been taking place along with the mandated Stay Home, Stay Safe orders implemented across the state.

Patrick Pinder, the Guadalupe County Emergency Management Officer, says while he knows that things can always change, he is grateful that the notifications by the Texas Department of State Health Services are becoming more favorable to report.

“Some cases around us, Bexar County has 772 cases, Comal has 37, Hays has 82, Guadalupe County hit 50 cases, Gonzales County had two cases, Medina has 13, Wilson has 11 and Caldwell has six. Out of the cases here in Guadalupe County, we have more recovered than we do active so that is good to see. The numbers coming in from the state are not high. We had the one high day of 11 but we’ve been averaging less than five so one to two. I did talk to the state a little about it, for the region, they only 10 positive case for our region so that’s a good sign that the social distancing is working,” said Pinder.

Pinder says unfortunately, there are no numbers to show its impact but believes social distancing, in the end, will have been the best tool used in this fight.

“We are still recommending the CDC and DSHS guidelines (for) social distancing. It’s one of the things that seems to be working in our county and I think that’s one thing that a lot of municipalities around us — that’s working so it’s one of the things that I want to keep pushing to the public,” said Pinder.

During a news conference earlier this week, Abbott stated that if this trend keeps up, then they’ll indicate that the state is headed in the right direction.

Pinder shared details about the effectiveness of social distancing during Tuesday’s regular meeting of the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court.
