KWED broadcast team wins top state award for play-by-play coverage

Mike McBride, Ivy Koehler-Meehan honored with Texas Associated Press award

(Seguin) – The Texas Associated Press annual Broadcasters Contest has honored KWED’s Mike McBride and Ivy Koehler-Meehan with a first place award in AP’s Play-by-Play category. The duo was recognized for its broadcast of the Navarro and Wimberley playoff football game last season. McBride is the sports director for the radio station and the Seguin Daily News. Koehler-Meehan is the color analyst for all high school football broadcasts on KWED, including all Seguin Matador games.

KWED Radio General Manager Darren Dunn says this is an especially high honor considering that McBride and Koehler-Meehan were competing in a category that includes stations from much larger markets.

“This just confirms what we already knew. Mike McBride is one of the best play-by-play people I’ve ever encountered. He is a terrific talent. He’s a real professional, and it shows in every broadcast. He and Ivy have become a terrific team. You love listening to those games on Friday nights. You know they’re going to paint a wonderful picture for you of the action that’s actually taking place on the field. You can see that in your mind’s eye, and it’s because they do such a great job. And they do it in a very professional way. I can’t stress that enough. I’m a little bit of a play by play snob. I want my people to not be too much of a homer, but I also want them to recognize who their listeners are and why people are tuned into the broadcast. Mike and Ivy do that every Friday night here on KWED. I’m so glad the Associated Press agrees that they are the best in the state,” said Dunn.

The first place award was slated to be presented at the AP’s ceremony next month, but the event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

AP announced McBride and Koehler-Meehan as finalists for the award earlier this month, and announced on Thursday that the pair had won the top play-by-play award.
