Field of Honor Committee to host fundraising dance

Field of Honor Committee to host fundraising dance

(Seguin) — A local group that gifted the community last year with its Field of Honor event remains busy planning for yet another year. However this time, the group is tackling the project a little bit earlier in hopes of securing the groundwork needed to salute our first responders and military heroes.

Connie Ramirez, one of the founding members of the local chapter of the Field of Honor Committee, says the group will be hosting a  Celebrating Our Heroes Dinner, Dance and Silent Auction this Saturday at the American Legion Post 245 Hall.

“The money raised from that will go to help support the field. There are invoices that we have to get paid in order to bring the field to life and so that’s what we are working toward so when people start sponsoring flags and buying flags for their loved ones, the money raised from that goes directly to the SS American Memorial so the money stays local but the SS American Memorial helps so many first responders, veterans, military throughout the year. There are thousands of troops that come in and out of their gates and it’s right  here in Seguin,” said Ramirez.

The Field of Honor event has been described as a patriotic sea of read, white and blue — consuming the field at Faith Lutheran Church just across the street from Seguin High School on State Highway 123 Bypass.

The event, hosted over the Fourth of July week, plants 7 and a half foot tall poles and American flags in honor of or in memory of a loved one. The $30 donations collected for the flags are then, as Ramirez mentioned, donated to the SS American Memorial located at the Lazy U Ranch here in Seguin.

Ramirez says tickets for Saturday night’s dinner and dance are $20 pre-sale or $30 at the door. She says residents will be treated to a fun night of fun and celebration.

“What you get with that $20 is from 6 to 7 p.m., we are having dinner. So, you get to come in an hour early before the dance starts, enjoy a dinner, look at the silent auction items. We have some awesome, awesome silent auction items that you can bid on. You can walk away with a great bargain. Then we have Clint Taft and the Buck Wild Band. They will perform starting at 7 and when he takes breaks in between and then an hour before and an hour after he’s done, we have DJ Izzy D that is also going to help us out and play a variety of music. So, we will have music for everyone,” said Ramirez.

Ramirez says she hopes the community comes out to help support the planning process for this year’s Field of Honor event. She says Seguin will again be one of the few Texas host sites in 2020. Like the Healing Field established after the 911 terrorist attacks on America, the Field of Honor is the Colonial Flag Foundation’s continued effort to remember and honor the sacrifices and heroism that go into celebrating America. Last year, Ramirez says the local event posted 1,000 American Flags.

“We posted a little over 1,000 flags last year and we had about 730 flags that were actually sponsored so this year, we hope to have 100 percent sponsored now that the community kind of knows what it is and we want them to be able to come out and enjoy it and have a memorial or something for their loved ones out there,” said Ramirez.

The dinner and dance will be held from 6 p.m. to midnight Saturday at the American Legion Hall. Tickets can be purchased by calling 830-243-2872 or obtained online by visiting eventbrite.com.
