(Seguin) — A year round effort to bring farmers and ranchers together with “you” the consumer will again be celebrated during today’s Texas Food Connection Day. Locally, the Texas Farm Bureau effort is observed with the serving of $1 hamburgers by farmers and ranchers in Guadalupe County.
Hosting the burger sale today will be the Guadalupe County Farm Bureau Office. Farm Bureau President John Friesenhahn says Food Connection Day is all about connecting with their urban neighbors.
“As the area gets more and more growth and we have more people coming into our county, there is less and less people that have any relationship or even contact with farmers and ranchers in the county and so this is our chance to kind of have people come out and there will be a lot of farmers and ranchers from Guadalupe County there that you can ask us questions. You can see who we are. A lot of people are interested to know where their food is coming from,” said Friesenhahn.
Friesenhahn says hamburgers anddrinks will be sold for $1 each. He says the price of the hamburger is also important in helping to better explain the time, effort and cost that is involved in ensuring that food arrives to your table.
“The reason why we are charging $1 for the hamburger is that it kind of represents our portion of what the farmers and ranchers get out of a hamburger. We get like 19 cents out of a dollar so that’s the other thing we are trying to emphasize is that there is a lot of other people that are involved before it gets to your table a lot of times so we are just the producers and we are just trying to reach out and say hello,” said Friesenhahn.
In the past, the Farm Bureau has served up its traditional pork burgers. However this year, thanks to a business partnership with Tyson Foods, the group will be serving beef burgers with all the trimmings.
The burgers and drinks will be served today beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Guadalupe County Farm Bureau Office. The food will be served until it’s all gone. The farm bureau office is located at 325 S. State Hwy. 46.
