Seguin welcomes new year with its 2020 Vision Plan

(Seguin) — The New Year is here, and Seguin Main Street is excited about the projects ahead for 2020! 2019 was a great year for downtown Seguin and the Seguin Main Street program is ready to continue to build on the successes of the last year. In 2020, Main Street will continue pedestrian improvements, rehabilitations of buildings and continue to grow events.

Downtown Pedestrian Improvements
In 2019, over 800 linear feet of sidewalks were repaired. In 2020, downtown Seguin will continue to see improvements for pedestrians. In January, TxDOT will begin intersection improvements at the signalized intersections along Austin Street. The improvements will include curb extensions and ADA ramps. Main Street was also recently notified that the City of Seguin has been awarded a $350,000 grant through the Texas Department of Agriculture’s Texas Capital Fund. This grant will address areas of high pedestrian traffic.

Commercial Building Rehabs
Several buildings in downtown are under construction right now and Main Street is excited for them all to be completed and welcome new businesses to downtown. One extremely big project is the rehabilitation of the Hot Spot, a former club and resale shop located at 214 E Court St. The interior demo has been completed and new mechanical is being installed. The owner has already painted the exterior and will be repairing the transoms and storefront windows. Once completed, the east entrance into downtown Seguin will be improved dramatically.

New Planters
Downtown Seguin is trying to become more green with the addition of planters. Main Street has received grant funding and is ready to launch the project! This project will be adding more planters and beautiful greenery to the downtown area adding to the aesthetics for visitors to downtown.

Expansion of Historic District
Seguin’s designated commercial historic district is big, but not all the buildings are included in the district. In 2019, Main Street oversaw a historic resource survey and the results of the survey recommended expanding the downtown Seguin historic district on both the local district and the National Register district. The expansion of the district will ensure that addition historic properties in Seguin will be protected and open these properties for incentives.

Continuation of Monthly Events

“Out with the old, in with new.” That motto is not relevant for downtown Seguin! We want to keep growing the downtown experience. 2019 continued Third Thursdays and brought in Food Truck Fridays. We wish to continue these events and make them apart of the Seguin experience. So if you missed them in 2019 look forward to every Third Thursday of the month shopping late with our downtown merchants and finding great deals and fun themes. Come back downtown every third Friday during the lunch hour to enjoy Food Truck Fridays. In the Justice Center parking lot, you will find a rotating line up of food trucks expanding the downtown dining experience.

2020 is here and Main Street cannot wait to see what all it has in store for downtown Seguin!
