Gerlich grabs 400th win, Seguin boys go 1-2 in Matador Classic
(Seguin) – Seguin boys basketball coach Dwayne Gerlich picked up his 400th career win Thursday when the Matadors defeated San Antonio-Marshall 74-62 in the second pool game of the Matador Classic at Goldie Harris Gym.

Seguin dropped Thursday’s early game to San Antonio-LEE 70-67 and finished the tournament with an 87-69 loss to San Antonio-Roosevelt on Saturday.

Joseph Vela led three Matadors in double figures against LEE with 19 points. Christopher James added 15, and Gerrit Twitero finished with 12. Kaleb McCann grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, while James dished out three assists. Vela and Tyson Coleman each came up with three steals. McCann and Matthew Doege contributed six points apiece, Coleman five, and R.J. Acuna four.

Vela pumped in 29 points in the win over Marshall. The senior guard shot 12-15 overall and made all three of his threes. James added 18 points, Twitero 13 points and seven rebounds, McCann and Jhalen Mickles four apiece, Acuna three to go with seven rebounds and seven assists, Doege two, and Coleman one.

James led the Mats with 20 points, eight rebounds, and three assists in Saturday’s loss to Roosevelt. Vela also reached double figures with 15 points. Doege finished with eight, Mickles seven, John Aguilar six, Louis Flores four, Coleman, Joey Ornelas, and Tredeveontae Battles three apiece. Doege pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

Seguin (4-4) opens the District 26-5A schedule Tuesday at Goldie Harris Gym with a 6:30 p.m. tip against San Antonio-Wagner.

Navarro girls finish second in home basketball tournament, Seguin ends up fourth

(Geronimo) – Midland-Greenwood snapped Navarro’s nine-game winning streak Saturday by handing the Panthers a 54-31 loss in the championship game of Navarro’s annual tournament in Geronimo.

The Panthers opened pool play Thursday with a a 48-26 win over San Antonio-Cole and a 45-36 triumph over Wimberley. Navarro edged John Paul II 41-36 to win its pool Friday and ran away from Floresville 52-29 in the bracket semifinals.

Lalyn Sturm scored 12 points to lead three Panthers in double figures against Cole. Sara Benner finished with 11, and Tatum Harborth chipped in with 10. Sturm also collected six assists and six steals, while Benner grabbed six rebounds.

Sturm delivered 13 points, three assists, and five steals Thursday against Wimberley. Julia Bumgardner pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Harborth totaled 11 points and three assists.

Harborth netted a team-high 13 points to go with five rebounds and five steals in the Friday win over John Paul II. Berklee Andrews also grabbed five rebounds. Benner dished out three assists.

The Friday semifinal win over Floresville saw Harborth pump in 18 points on 9-14 shooting. Sturm contributed 10 points, seven assists, and six steals. Ali Harless added nine points. Ryanne Hepp came up with nine rebounds. Benner totaled seven points, seven rebounds, and five steals.

Harborth was the only Panther to reach double figures in Saturday’s loss to Greenwood, finishing with 15 points. Bumgardner snared seven rebounds.

Sturm and Harborth each made the All-Tournament team.

Navarro (11-5) looks to start a new winning streak Tuesday when Karnes City visits the Navarro Events Center at 6:30 p.m.

Seguin also played in the Navarro tournament and capped a 2-3 weekend with a 44-40 loss to Floresville in Saturday’s third-place game.

The Matadors lost to Del Rio 56-46 and defeated Somerset 53-39 in Thursday’s pool games. Seguin blew out Austin-Navarro 42-16 in the final pool game on Friday, but came up short to Greenwood 58-39 in the bracket semifinals.

Seguin (7-9) resumes the District 26-5A schedule Tuesday with a 6:30 p.m. road game at San Antonio-Wagner.

Marion boys go 1-3 in home hoops tourney
(Marion) – Marion ended up with a win and three close losses last week in its annual boys basketball tournament.

The Bulldogs dropped the first game to Wimberley 49-45, but bounced back to outlast Gregory-Portland 61-51 on Friday. Somerset edged Marion 52-50 on Saturday, and Canyon Lake handed the Bulldogs a 61-51 setback in the final game.

Zach Goodwin scored 14 points in the loss to Wimberley, Ryken Autry finished with nine, and Fernando Romero chipped in with eight.

Autry poured in 24 points and went 6-9 from three-point range in the win over Gregory-Portland. Goodwin added 12 points, while Bradley Cook chipped in with nine.

Autry drained three more threes as part of 23-point effort in Saturday’s loss to Somerset. Goodwin also reached double figures with 10 points.

Goodwin scored nine points and dished out four assists in the loss to Canyon Lake. Autry finished with seven points and six rebounds.

Marion (3-4) hosts La Vernia on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Tough weekend for Marion girls in home tournament
(Marion) – Marion came up short in all four games of hits home basketball tournament last week, falling to Yoakum 49-38 and Smithville 76-54 on Thursday, and to Boerne 63-17 and Devine 41-17 on Saturday.

The Bulldogs played with a shorthanded lineup on Saturday, as starters Lizzie Abrameit and Lily Bek were busy helping Marion to a second-place finish in the State FFA Contest.

Abrameit scored 18 points Thursday against Yoakum. Signe Rabenaldt addded nine. Molly Rooke grabbed seven rebounds. Abrameit and Sarah Cook each collected two steals.

Abrameit finished with 25 points and two steals in the loss to Smithville. Cook finished with eight points. She and Rooke each coralled six rebounds. Anessa Madrid recorded two blocks.

Catherline Koehler scored five points in Saturday’s loss to Boerne. Rooke pulled down nine rebounds against Devine.

Marion (2-8) returns to action Tuesday with a 6:30 p.m. visit to Bandera.

Falcons fall in Austwell-Tivoli tournament final
(Tivoli) – The Lifegate boys basketball team suffered a 72-45 loss to Tidehaven in the championship game of the Austwell-Tivoli tournament on Saturday.

Zachary McCulloch and Quinten Shellnut each made the All-Tournament team for their efforts over the course of the Falcons’ 2-1 run through the event.

Lifegate defeated Corpus Christi-Arlington Heights 62-17 and Austwell-Tivoli 42-33 in the first two tournament games.

Shellnut scored 26 points, McCulloch 15, and Robert Galvan 11 in the win over Arlington Heights. McCulloch and Shellnut added 14 and 13, respectively, against Austwell-Tivoli.

The Falcons (2-2) visit Austin-Griffin this Friday at 6:00.
