Seguin ISD begins steps for next bond project; prepares for demolition of Matador Stadium

Joshua Avalos is among the many SHS students who took advantage of Matador Stadium for senior portraits. After Friday night’s game, the stadium comes down.

(Seguin) — The Seguin ISD is keeping the ball rolling in its rollout of voter approved bond projects. With the construction of the new Matador Stadium now underway, the next thing on the list for the Seguin ISD is the purchase and installation of new ADA playground equipment for each elementary school campus.

Superintendent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez says action during Tuesday’s school board meeting now allows the district to oversee the project and help prepare the campuses for their delivery of new equipment and shade canopies.

“We are very excited about now being able to move forward being that the board adopted the resolution to move forward with the construction method for the playground equipment and I know that people in the community are eager and our students are eager, our parents are eager about this and we’ve fielded a lot of questions about the playgrounds and I think people seeing what’s happening with the stadium and the progress that is taking place, people want to see what is going to happen at A.J.B., at Jefferson and with the playgrounds. I do want to assure people that the playgrounds will be in place by the time that school starts next school year. This resolution that the board adopted is going to allow us to begin accept proposals to begin the work on the playgrounds at every single elementary school,” said Gutierrez.

Dr. Gutierrez says installing the equipment, however, won’t be as easy as simply going in and replacing the equipment where it is now. He says each campus will be studied for that ideal location.

“There will be some changes with some elementary campuses in the future with the long range facilities plan. We are all aware that there’s going to be a need for a new McQueeney school and a need for some renovations at Weinert. So keeping that in mind, the playground equipment might be a little bit different at those schools but we feel very strongly that every school is going to have new playscapes for our students,” said Gutierrez.

The district says any equipment installed will be able to be relocated if necessary. District officials say the installation of the equipment, however, will be no easy task and will take several months to complete.

While the school district this week embraces the future of new playground equipment, it can’t help but also be a bit disappointed in having to say good-bye to all remaining structures and home side stands of Seguin High School’s Matador Stadium.

Dr. Gutierrez says this Friday at Matador Stadium marks the end of an era for the athletic facility. He says the Matador Stadium that we have come to know and love will no longer exist after the remaining portion of the structure comes down following the game.

“I think it’s going to be a bittersweet moment on Friday since that is the last game. I think a lot of people have many fond memories of Matador Stadium. It’s been around for over 60 years so it is certainly something that has brought the community together in so many ways both school related but also community related. So, I think we are going to be able to put a lot of closure on things but we’re going to look forward to the new Matador Stadium next year were we will be able to kick off the 2020 football season and I think we are all excited about that and I think people get more excited every time they pass by and see progress being made and I think once they start seeing the home stands coming down and the new stands coming up, people are going to be more excited about the future of Matador Stadium and the future of Seguin ISD especially with our new high school. It’s really a sign of the progress that is taking shape not only in Seguin ISD but in Seguin,” said Gutierrez.

Again, both the new stadium and playgrounds for each elementary school are expected to be ready for play in the fall of 2020.
