TLU linebacker Derek Dunn collects ASC, D3football.com weekly honors
(Seguin) – Texas Lutheran senior linebacker Derek Dunn has been named the American Southwest Conference Football Defensive Player of the Week and selected to the D3football.com Team of the Week after playing a leading role in TLU’s 27-0 shutout of Southwestern on Saturday night.
Dunn collected 11 total tackles, recorded two sacks for 18 yards and made five tackles for loss resulting in 24 total yards lost by the Pirates.
TLU held Southwestern to 158 total rushing yards on 55 carries, an average of 2.9 yards per carry. The Pirates came into the game against TLU having rushed for more than 300 yards in each of their previous two games.
TLU dominated Southwestern in Bulldog Stadium and went to 2-0 in the ASC by forcing six turnovers and shutting out the Pirates for the first time in nine all-time meetings.
Southwestern came into the American Southwest Conference match-up averaging 48.5 points per game. But TLU’s defense held the Pirates scoreless, recovered all four of Southwestern’s fumbles, and intercepted a pair of Pirate passes.
TLU (2-1, 2-0 ASC) faces sixth-ranked Hardin-Simmons at 6 p.m. Saturday in Abilene, Texas. The Cowboys are 3-0 and 2-0 in the ASC. The game will air live on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com, with streaming video at tlubulldogs.com and pre-game coverage starting at 5:30.
Lexi Morris earns second SCAC Defensive Player of the Week honor
(Seguin) – Texas Lutheran Women’s Volleyball libero Lexi Morris has been named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for a second time in the 2019 season.
Morris, a freshman from Victoria, registered 26 digs last week in a three-set SCAC win over the University of St. Thomas.
Morris’ 26 digs represent the second-highest, single-match dig total of her career and the top dig total in a three-set match in the SCAC this year. Morris has a career-high dig total of 33, set on Sept 21 in a five-set loss to Austin College.
Morris also added 12 digs in a three-set road loss last week against Huston-Tillotson.
A starter at libero in all 17 matches this year for TLU, Morris averages 4.37 digs per set. She has 271 total digs, and she has served 20 aces and collected 49 assists.
TLU Men’s Tennis concludes 2019 fall season with play at ITA Regional Championships
(Georgetown) – Texas Lutheran Men’s Tennis competed Thursday through Sunday at the 2019 Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Southwest Regional Championships, hosted by Southwestern University.
Johari Dramiga and Joshua Bowman each won matches in the main draw of “D” Flight singles and “E” Flight singles, respectively, and Bowman advanced to the “E” Flight championship match.
Dramiga won his opening match 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4) in a third-set, 10-point tiebreaker against Mary Hardin-Baylor’s Brandon Huckabee. Dramiga played another three-set, 10-point tiebreaker match in the “D” semifinal round, falling 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8) to Jonah McGinty of LeTourneau.
Bowman won three matches, all in straight sets, before dropping the “E” Flight final 6-3, 6-3 to Mario Gallinar of Schreiner. Bowman’s three wins came by scores of 6-2, 6-2 against Chris Corbett of Schreiner, 6-0, 6-3 against Dale Wallace of LeTourneau, and 6-4, 6-1 against Peter Ellwanger of St. Thomas (Texas).
Bowman and Simon Carandang reached the “D” Flight doubles final. Bowman and Carandang won a couple of matches in the draw before falling 8-4 in the final to Martinez/Naiser of Concordia Texas.
Dristan Weaver won two matches in the “E” Flight consolation bracket.
TLU soccer teams conclude non-conference play with wins over Schreiner
(Kerrville) – The Texas Lutheran men’s and women’s soccer team finished the non-conference portions of their respective schedule with wins over Schreiner by identical 3-0 finals Sunday in Kerrville.
The TLU men moved to 6-3 overall. Schreiner dropped to 2-7-1.
Junior midfielder Braulio Adam scored the game-winner in the 41st minute. The goal was unassisted.
The Bulldogs broke open the match with two goals in the second half. Cameron Townes took a feed from Lalo Lopez-Rivera and scored in the 56th minute.
Lopez-Rivera scored himself in the 80th minute with an assist from Joao Maia.
Caleb Weed made four saves in goal for TLU.
TLU out-shot Schreiner 18-10 and had a 7-4 edge in shots on goal.
The TLU women held Schreiner to four total shots. The Bulldogs improved to 5-3-1 overall with the win. Schreiner dropped to 4-5-2. The match was a non-conference affair between the two Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference clubs.
TLU out-shot Schreiner 15-4.
TLU picked up goals from Mariela Candelario, Liliana Avila and Jessica Acosta.
Candelario scored the eventual game-winner in the 40th minute. Avila added the second TLU goal just before half, at the 43:44 mark.
Acosta capped the victory with a goal in the 89th minute.
Both TLU teams start conference play this Friday with home matches against Austin College at Gustafson Field. The women play and 5 p.m., and the men follow at 7:00.
