(Seguin) — When it comes to getting the job done quickly, the city of Seguin apparently has one of the quickest employees in the nation. The city is celebrating Tommy McCormick, a master electrician at the city of Seguin, for his second place finish in the National Meter Madness Championship. Meter Madness, hosted by the American Water Works Association, is a contest where competitors assemble a dismantled water meter in the shortest amount of time.

McCormick placed second out of 30 competitors from throughout the country and Mexico. The contest was held earlier this month in Denver, CO.

McCormick advanced to nationals after winning first place on April 3 at the state Meter Madness Competition held in Houston. McCormick, who recorded 34 seconds at state, says his final time at the national contest was 32.09 seconds — again, earning him the second-place finish.

“So we went up. Of course, I was real nervous especially in front of that many competitors. I did really good. My first run was 31 seconds with something else so that got me into the finals which I think I was in third place going into the finals — maybe fourth — I don’t remember. So what they do, you get two runs to qualify and after the two runs, I was lucky to qualify. They take the top four people and you do one run and then they take the top two people and they establish first and second place. So, I ended up making it in the top two which put me against last year’s champion whose from Alabama. Josh is a really nice guy and of course, we got to know each other already. You couldn’t ask for a better group of guys to go up against. There’s no negativity. Everyone is just wishing each other the best of luck. So we were all excited to be there and then he was just nine tenths of a second faster than me,” said McCormick.

McCormick says it was an honor to represent Texas and especially Seguin on a national level. He says he’s humbled by the level of support shown to him by his co-workers who helped him practice for the competition.

“I knew there was a lot of stiff competition but I knew I had a good shot. I’ve been practicing hard. A lot of the guys that I work with Brad, Dodson, Ernest and Brian, they were there just every afternoon helping me time, would run against me just trying to help get my time down and and of course, my boss Rod Ramirez and Tim Howe, they were encouraging me and everybody else across the city also,” said McCormick.

McCormick especially thanks all the city of Seguin employees and those in the community who along the way rallied behind them and showed their support.

This marks McCormick’s second appearance at the national contest. McCormick represented Seguin in 2018 at the National Meter Madness competition in Las Vegas, where he placed 7th out of 30 other competitors.
