Seguin ISD to offer free summer camps, sign-up now available

Seguin, TX, USA / Seguin Today

(Seguin) — Whether its paddling, solving a mystery, dancing or coding their own video game, the Seguin ISD is making sure that each of its students have a reason to get off the couch his summer.

Registration is now underway for MatCamp 2019. A number of free summer camps are again being made available for students in kindergarten through the 12th grades. Even 2019 graduates are welcome to return to campus for some summertime fun.

Randy Rodgers, director of digital learning services for the Seguin ISD, says just because it’s summer, it doesn’t stop the Seguin ISD from investing in its kids.

“This is something that’s really unique to the Seguin ISD. Personally, I don’t know of any other districts that offer this type of program in the summer — this extensive and the vast number of opportunities that we have for our kids in the terms of free summer camp experiences and basically they are just unique opportunities to sort of extend a student’s learning but also just to get them exposure to experiences and things that maybe they don’t have time for or don’t fit into the regular curriculum during the school year. It’s just a form of enriching their lives. Maybe a lot of our kids don’t get a lot of family vacation times and travel with parents working and this is just a way for them to have a valuable life experience or a set of them during the summer,” said Rodgers.

Rodgers says while the camps are free, spots in the various programs don’t last long and require online registration as soon as possible.

“We are one day in and so there’s a couple of our really, really in demand camps that are already filled up. We have one where they go spend a few days at HEB Camp out at Leakey and that has already filled up. There are waiting lists for these things and sometimes, we do have cancellations and then we just basically start at the top of the waiting list and bump people. Garden camp which is one that has been held for several years by one of our awesome teachers from Rodriguez is also full but the rest still have spaces. We’ve got a lot of new offerings this year. We’ve got some high school coding and robotics camps that we haven’t had before. We got a camp this year that actually focuses on mindfulness which is a big topic around society right now on how to focus, how to deal with stress and things like that. We will be doing some meditation exercises which I’m really excited about after I’ve been studying lately on how this can benefit our students. We’ve got a couple of reading focus campus,” said Rodgers.

Other camp options include but are not limited to archery, gardening, CSI crime investigations, mountain biking, art, robotics and chess.

Registration opened Monday. Registration is available online at tinyurl.com/matcamp19. Space is limited for each program. Camp times, locations and dates vary throughout the summer. Again, participation will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Once a camp is full, students may be added to a waiting list.
