Texas Lutheran wins third straight SCAC Championship in Men’s Track & Field
(San Antonio) – Saturday at Trinity University, Texas Lutheran Men’s Track & Field won its third consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship by scoring 236 points and finishing 46 points ahead of Trinity.

The Bulldogs received conference championships in nine different events over the two days.

Junior sprinter Darren Jones (Waller/Waller) won the 100 and the 200 titles. Jones, an indoor All-American this year and an outdoor All-American last year, took the title of the SCAC’s fastest man with a time of 10.56 seconds. Jones edged his teammate Paris Foster (Magnolia/Magnolia) for the 100 crown. Foster clocked a 10.63.

In the 200, Jones raced to a winning time of 21.53.

Jones set a new SCAC meet record in the 100, breaking former Bulldog Bryce Johnson’s 2017 standard of 10.56. Jones ran the second-fastest 200 in conference meet history.

Dillan Wendel (Wharton/Boling) captured the 800 with a time of 1:54.99, and Foster won the 110 hurdles in a time of 15.01. Travis Roberts (Bastrop/Cedar Creek) finished behind Foster in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.84.

TLU won the 4×100 relay with a squad that included Foster, Connor Thompson (Nederland/Nederland), Tyler Dykes (Iola/Iola), and Jones. The Bulldogs posted a time of 41.31.

Garrett Garza (Round Rock/Stony Point) captured the SCAC title in the shot put with a new school-record toss of 17.39 meters (57 feet, 3/4 inches). Garza won the shot put title for a third straight year and set the new SCAC meet record as well. Jalen Starks (San Antonio/Antonian) finished as the SCAC runner-up with heave of 14.54 meters (47-8 1/2).

Garza also took the discus title. He won with a mark of 45.35 meters (148-9).

Garza, a three-time champ in the shot put, is the first SCAC man to sweep the discus and the shot in the same meet since Trinity’s Justin Campbell in 2013.

TLU also received SCAC runner-up performances from: Thompson in the 400, Caleb Calderon (Austin/Akins) in the 5,000, Caimen McDonough (Canyon Lake/Canyon Lake) in the high jump, Chad Wieland (Seguin/Navarro) in the pole vault, Donovan Williamson (San Antonio/Brennan) in the long jump, and William Guerrier-Gattis (Bishop/Bishop) in the triple jump.

On Friday, Jacob Guercia (Forney/Forney) and Ryan Geiger (Shiner/St. Paul) captured conference championships in the hammer throw and the javelin, respectively.

TLU’s Paris Foster named SCAC Male Athlete of the Meet at SCAC Championships

(San Antonio) – Texas Lutheran junior Paris Foster was named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Male Athlete of the Meet at the conclusion of the 2019 SCAC Track & Field Championships.

Saturday at Trinity University, Foster won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.01 seconds, and he posted a runner-up finish in the 100 meters with a time of 10.63.

Foster also ran in the 200, finishing fourth with a time of 21.92.

In the 4×100 relay team, Foster raced with teammates Connor Thompson (Nederland/Nederland), Tyler Dykes (Iola/Iola) and Darren Jones (Waller/Waller). The Bulldogs won the relay in an SCAC near-record time of 41.31. The time is the second-fastest time in SCAC championship meet history.

The 4×100 relay time is the sixth-fastest mark in DIII this year.

Foster also ran on TLU’s 4×400 relay team. The squad finished third with a time of 3:28.65. Foster joined with Caimen McDonough (Canyon Lake/Canyon Lake), Travis Roberts (Bastrop/Cedar Creek), and Connor Thompson (Nederland/Nederland).

Foster personally accounted for 26 points in TLU’s SCAC-winning team performance at the track championships. The Bulldogs won their third consecutive SCAC Championship in men’s track and field.

Foster now ranks 10th in NCAA Division III in the 100 with his time at the SCAC Championships.

In the 110 hurdles, Foster holds the 12th-fastest time with a 14.62 time he posted March 23 at the TLU D3 Challenge.

Foster earned 2018 All-America honors as a member of TLU’s 2018 national runner-up 4×100 relay team.

TLU Women’s Track & Field finishes as SCAC runner-up
(San Antonio) – Texas Lutheran Women’s Track & Field finished as the runner-up in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference at the 2019 SCAC Championships at Trinity University.

The Bulldogs took second in the team race for the fifth consecutive season. TLU scored 168 points. Trinity picked up 233 points.

TLU won SCAC Championships in nine events over the two days.

Ashley Myers (Ingleside/Edna) won the women’s 100 and 200 on Saturday. The senior captured the 100 in a time of 12.31 seconds and the 200 in 25.69.

Ashley Rynard (Temple/Temple) also grabbed a pair of titles on Saturday. Rynard won the 800 in a time of 2:19.81, and she took the 1,500 crown in 4:54.85.

The Bulldogs also grabbed a conference championship in the 4×400 relay. Ashlee Hooks (Meridian/Meridian), Myers, Kylee Garcia (Wichita Falls/Rider) and Rynard edged Trinity with a winning time of 4:04.49. Trinity crossed the line in 4:04.75.

Hannah Kipp (Ledbetter/Round Top-Carmine) recorded a win in the discus with a throw of 40.95 meters (134 feet, 4 inches). Dejah Carr (Houston/Channelview) finished as the discus runner-up with a toss of 39.57 meters (129-10).

Runner-up finishes on Saturday also came from Rynard in the 400 and Cortnee Priour (Victoria/Goliad) in the long jump.

On Friday, Tia Hart (Edna/Industrial), Carr, and Priour won individual titles in the javelin, hammer, and triple jump, respectively.
