Wayfinding signs finding their way to Seguin

Wayfinding signs finding their way to Seguin

(Seguin) — Local residents could see new wayfinding signs going up around town in just a matter of months. The Seguin City Council on Tuesday received an update on the wayfinding sign project, which is part branding campaign and part mapping project. The new signs will point the way to important locations in Seguin.

Kyle Kramm, Main Street Program and CVB director, says that they’ve been working with the contractor that helped to design the signs, and will install them at strategically located spots here in town.

“About two months ago, we ordered a bid for wayfinding signage to SSC Signs and we’ve been working with them ever since to finalize what the signs will look like, get their dimensions and on the message for each sign and so we just wanted to come back now that we have pretty much everything finalized to provide you with some input on what’s happening. We first have about 11 signs that will look like this. It will be on the inner corridors of Seguin on these lower speed limits signs where they will be 3.5 feet by 2.5 feet and then plus the enhancement marker on top which is another foot. So those will be on Kingsbury, Court, Austin and in the downtown District and Erkel and Guadalupe (streets),” said Kramm.

Kramm says some larger wayfinding signs will also be going up on some more heavily traveled roadways across Seguin.

“The remaining signs are about six feet long and are going to be 3.5 feet tall and then plus the enhancement marker on the top as well. The enhancement marker is the Seguin, Texas. That is what that is called. So, these will be larger signs and they are going to have a six inch font. We originally were shooting to have four inch font on the smaller signs and eight inch font on the larger signs but some of the messages — so like the historic downtown or Sebastopol House wouldn’t fit with the eight inch font so we went to six inch and then we looked at the plans from San Marcos and New Braunfels and they also had a six inch font as well so we are confident that the six inch would work for us. So these signs would be out on the bypass, the frontage roads on IH 10, Highway 46. Where we are going from here is we’ve been talking with TxDOT now about scheduling the meeting to get their blessing on this design. We had two or three locations that we still needed to pin down the exact spot where they are going to go so those are the last few details that we are going to work out through TxDOT before we do the formal submittal to them,” said Kramm.

The signs will tie into the city’s logo and point out key locations, like ZDT’s Amusement Park, the city’s historic power plant (now a restaurant site), and the Seguin Visitor’s Center. The list of other sites also to be pointed out with the wayfinding signs includes the Sebastopol House — which now houses the Wilson Pottery Museum, the downtown historic district, the Seguin Public Library, the Seguin Events Complex, the Fields at Huber Ranch, Starcke Park, and the Big Red Barn.

Kramm says they still need to secure approvals for each sign from the Texas Department of Transportation. He says hopefully the signs will start going up in June.
