(Seguin) — This Sunday marks the final concert of the 2018-2019 Mid-Texas Symphony Season. Teresa Cheung is the fourth and final music director candidate to take stage this Sunday at Texas Lutheran University’s Jackson Auditorium.
After receiving almost 100 resumes from conductors all over the world, Mid-Texas Symphony at the beginning of the season not only narrowed its search to four candidates but it also set the platform allowing each of them to conduct a concert along the way. The candidates are looking to fill the position relinquished by 22-year veteran Maestro David Mairs who stepped down at the end of the 2017-2018 season — also the group’s 40th anniversary.
Officials with the Mid-Texas Symphony say by affording each of them the opportunity to take the podium and conduct a concert, it allows the community to weigh in on the search. They say a survey completed by the audience gives feedback on the candidate’s style, performance and fit.
When chosen, the selected candidate will take the baton in 2019-2020 beginning Season No. 42.
Cheung, a native of Hong Kong, is said to be in frequent demand for symphonic, choral, operatic and balletic productions throughout the United States and Canada.
Additionally, she often appears as conductor for colleges and universities and with All State/All County orchestra festivals. She has also served as a conducting clinician for Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts’ “Meet the Artist” program.
She is widely known for her creative concert programming, collaborative projects and community outreach programs and for being a passionate advocate for music education for all ages. Cheung received her Masters Degree in Conducting from the Eastman School of Music. She is also the recipient of the JoAnn Falletta Conducting Award for the most promising female conductors.
The concert is scheduled for 4 p.m. Sunday at Jackson Auditorium at the Weston Center. Tickets can be purchased at the box office or online at mtsymphony.org.
