Long time Floresville resident, Elizabeth (Betsy) Ann Atzger Herry, passed away surrounded by family and friends on Friday,
August 24, 2018 in Floresville after complications from surgery earlier in the summer. Born in the Atzger home outside of Seguin in Guadalupe County, August 28, 1939, Betsy grew up with her family, uncles, and grandmother on the land that had been in the family for generations. She married Mike Lee Herry in Seguin 58 years ago, making their life and home together, eventually settling in Floresville in 1969. Betsy was a dedicated volunteer in her children’s public school classrooms, in cub scouts and in Brownies. In addition, Betsy served on the Wilson County Memorial Hospital board of directors and was a key volunteer in the local Emergency Medical Service (EMS) for many years, being recognized for her “wonderful ability to see humor in every situation, [her] wisdom, kindness, cheerfulness and compassion [which] enriched” the lives of others. She and Mike did everything together and particularly loved to travel to the island of Nevis, to work on their farm, to snow ski, and to play golf. Betsy was a force of energy whether baking a cake, caring for her children and grandchildren, feeding her cattle, or staging a family gathering, where she always made magic happen. Betsy is survived by her husband of 58 years, Michael (Mike) Lee Herry, a son, Mark Lee Herry, of Floresville, a daughter, Michelle Lee Herry Kearney, and husband, Steve Kearney, granddaughter, Kathleen Elizabeth Kearney, and grandson, John Christian Kearney, all of Cypress, Texas. In addition, she is survived by her brother Jimmy Atzger and wife, Sharon Atzger, of Seguin, a second brother, Jesse Atzger and wife, Deloris Atzger, of Seguin, and a sister, Diann McCabe and husband, Terry McCabe, of San Marcos, and numerous nieces and nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Nora Atzger, and a nephew, Trever Atzger, of Seguin. Plans are pending for a memorial service at Franklin Funeral Home in Floresville. In lieu of flowers, memorials for Betsy may be made to the charity of your choice.
