SHS Matador Band BBQ fundraiser set for today

(Seguin) — Tickets still remain for this year’s Seguin High School Band Boosters BBQ and Auction Fundraiser. The fundraiser is scheduled for tonight at the high school campus. The chicken and sausage plate fundraiser will be served from 5 to 9 p.m.

Band Director Stan Mauldin says tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door.

“Our community looks forward to the band barbecue every year. It’s a traditional thing. It’s been going on, gosh, maybe since God invented dirt I don’t know. It’s been here for a long, long, long time. Last year, we served 2,500 plates of barbecue so 10 percent of Seguin’s population came and saw our bands and came through the line. It’s a great event for us, a huge fundraiser for all of the band programs junior high and high school so it’s a big day for us,” said Mauldin.

Mauldin says in addition to great food, guests will be treated to music by students from across the district.

“We have all of the band kids perform. There’s like 700 band kids in the district right now. So, every child in the district will be performing and then there’s a silent auction. There’s also a live auction so it’s a pretty big event. We’ve been working right at a year for it. As soon as we get finished with the auction on Thursday, we’ll start it again you know the next Monday or Tuesday right after that. So, we’ve been working on a year on it,” said Mauldin.

Kicking off tonight’s entertainment will be band students at A.J. Briesemeister Middle School. The band will perform at 5 p.m. followed by Barnes students at 6 p.m. This year’s live auction gets underway at 7 p.m. It will be followed by a performance by the Seguin Matador Band.

Mauldin says you don’t have to have a child or know a band student to help support the program. He says the band program is a win-win for everyone.

“It’s a big day for the band and as you know, the band students here are what we think are the cream of the crop. Studies show that kids who do music, do better in school. They are better adjusted in life so if you can by and support our band kids, I think it’s a great thing for all of us,” said Mauldin.

Plates will include mesquite smoked barbecue leg quarters and sausage plus potato salad and baked beans. Tickets are $10 each. Tickets can be purchased in advance at Seguin Radio KWED. A drive-thru will also be available from 5 to 7 p.m.
