Seguin Public Library invites you to come out and celebrate National Library Week

(Seguin) — The Seguin Public Library is inviting you to check out and celebrate its role in the community. This week is National Library Week (April 7-13).

Assistant Library Director Silvia Christy says despite the one week observance, the local library has chosen to celebrate all month long. Christy says the library is more than just about books, it’s about keeping people connected.

“This year, the theme for the National Celebration is Libraries=Strong Communities so we are really excited about that theme because if you think about it, libraries are typically providing the community with access to ideas, information. We are the center where people come in for finding what they need to do better in health, to get information, services. So, we are really excited that this year with a strong community, we are always working with partnerships with organizations here in town to bring new items, new programs, new ideas to the community. So, we are really excited. We want the community to come in and enjoy all the things we have to offer from electronic materials, downloadables, to our collection, to our programs, to our services, to our highly trained staff that we have that can answer their questions. We are here for the community and we want the community to know that,” said Christy.

In addition to its regular programing, the library will continue to feature health and wellness events such as DOC Talk. Plus every Thursday, the community is invited to participate in Yoga at the Library with HK Yoga. The library will also host adult and teen book clubs; a special children’s book party “After The Fall: How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again” by Dan Santat, plus an egg drop science experiment.

One of the featured programs being offered this month is this Saturday’s special choir performance featuring the Essence Women’s Choir, “Love Can Build a Bridge.” Christy says the choir is comprised of women from all walks of life who love to sing together and who help provide support to women and children in need.

“It’s a group of volunteers of women from Central Texas. We have members from Seguin, New Braunfels, Austin, San Antonio and they are all about providing support for women and children. So, they do this free concert for the community to raise funds for organizations throughout Central Texas. They are asking for a small donation if possible at the door and all of the proceeds will go back to the community. They will go back to the Guadalupe Valley Family Violence Shelter,” said Christy.

The performance is being made possible by the Friends of the Library. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Saturday followed by the performance at 6 p.m. Seating will be limited to the first 120 people so early arrival is encouraged.

During National Library Week, the Seguin Public Library will also host special events for all ages, including Scavenger Hunts for both children and adults and a guessing jar where patrons can guess how many books are in the library. Participate in these events for a chance to win prizes. Take a picture at the library’s photo booth, upload and tag the library to be entered into a raffle prize drawing.

Christy says thanks to local businesses Court St. Coffee Shop, Sweet Treats, and Fresh Donuts complimentary coffee and cookies will be provided at the library through Friday.

A calendar of events is available on the library’s webpage at library.seguintexas.gov.
