Memorial Day events offer opportunities to honor fallen heroes in Seguin

(Seguin) – Local residents looking for ways to observe Memorial Day will have several opportunities this holiday weekend.

This Saturday, the public is invited to a free special patriotic concert featuring the United States Air Force Band of the West at the Seguin High School Performing Arts Center. The free community concert is scheduled from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the PAC located at 1315 East Cedar Street. The event is part of the band’s Memorial Day weekend performances across Central Texas and is open to the public.

Community members are also invited to gather on Monday for the annual Memorial Day Service hosted by Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. Monday, May 25 at the cemetery located at 2951 State Highway 46. Organizers say the service will honor military members who gave their lives in service to the country. Guests are also invited to stay following the ceremony for a lunch catered by Guac & Lime featuring free hamburgers, chips and drinks.

In addition to organized ceremonies, at least one resident will also be participating in the nationwide “Taps Across America” tribute on Monday afternoon.

Among them is Roxanne Heckmann, who plans to once again perform Taps from her front lawn at 3 p.m. Monday as part of the National Moment of Remembrance.

In 2000, Congress established the National Moment of Remembrance, encouraging Americans to pause at 3 p.m. local time for one minute of silence. Taps Across America extends that tribute by inviting musicians nationwide to sound Taps in unison.

Memorial Day marks a day of reflection dedicated to the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Originally known as Decoration Day, the tradition dates back to the Civil War when families placed flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers.

The public is invited to listen to Seguin Radio KWED for any changes due to the weather. They can also visit SeguinToday.com or check out the KWED and Seguin Daily News Facebook page.
