For Immediate Release
BATESVILLE, AR — Weston Guzman (McAllen/McAllen) rushed for 37 yards and two touchdowns and Texas Lutheran’s revitalized defense had the Bulldogs’ first shutout since 2019 in a 49-0 victory over Lyon College on Saturday in Batesville, Arkansas.

The 49 point scoring output is the highest point tally of the Neal LaHue era and most in a single game since a 51-point outburst against McMurry in the spring 2021 COVID-19 season.

Caden Bosanko (San Antonio/East Central) passed for 123 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 37 more with another touchdown on the ground for the Bulldogs (3-1, 2-1 SCAC).

TLU was in control all afternoon in the first-time ever matchup against the Scots. The Bulldogs would tie the program record with four interceptions in a single-game – a feat only achieved twice before in program history (vs. Howard Payne, 2013; vs. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 1962). The interceptions would come from DJ Lewis (Brookshire/Brazos), Xavier Simpson (Round Rock/Stony Point), and Troy Tomaselli, who would finish with two on the day. Texas Lutheran would limit the Scots (1-3, 0-2 SCAC) to 258 yards of total offense, with a lot of those coming in the second half against the Bulldogs backups.

The shutout was the program’s first in 45 games since its 27-0 shutout of Southwestern early in the 2019 season.

A rushing touchdown from Guzman would be the lone score from either team in the first quarter. The Bulldogs began to pull away in the second quarter as the Bulldogs capitalized off an interception from lineman DJ Lewis to find the end zone via a 12 yard rushing touchdown from Chase Patek (Victoria/Victoria East). Caden Bosanko would scamper for a five-yard score to cap the Bulldogs following drive and convert a two-point conversion to bring the score to 21-0.

Troy Tomaselli (San Antonio/Cornerstone Christian) would collect his second interception of the afternoon and return it 85 yards to set up the Bulldogs final scoring drive of the first half which would see Guzman find the end zone for the second time on Saturday.

Bosanko would find Caleb Camarillo (San Antonio/Southside) for a 28-yard passing touchdown for the first score of the second half as the Bulldogs continued to pour it on. In the final drive before all starters were pulled, freshman wide receiver Lavonta Henry (San Antonio/Madison) would score on a ten-yard rush to bring the score to 42-0.

Quarterback Jacob Smith (Spring /Legacy School of Sports Science) finished up for the Bulldogs, rushing for a touchdown and throwing for 25 yards. Landon Gill (San Antonio/Madison) would also see action, throwing for 25 yards and rushing for twelve.

Reggie Hodge (San Antonio/Roosevelt) led the Bulldogs with 40 yards rushing while Caleb Camarillo finished with 100 yards receiving on five receptions. Texas Lutheran would finish with 400 yards of total offense.

Tristan Smith (New Braunfels/Canyon) led the Bulldogs defense with eight tackles (six solo) and a pass break up. Sean Blanks (Angleton/Angleton) would add five solo tackles on Saturday.

Texas Lutheran returns to Bulldog Stadium next Saturday, as the Bulldogs host Austin College on Oct. 5. Kickoff against the ‘Roos is set for 1 PM and the game will be streamed on TLU+ along with KWED 1580 AM. The game will serve as the Bulldogs annual Pink Out Breast Cancer Awareness game.
