Seguin Art League reveals renovated art center in downtown

(Seguin) — Over a year ago, the Seguin Art League began renovating the space that would become the new Henry Moore Gallery downtown. Finally, on Thursday, the facility opened its doors and invited the community to come in and check it out.Clara Mae Marcotte is the Art League’s president and shared her excitement for the grand opening.

“It feels pretty darn good,” Marcotte said. “It’s actually exciting. There’s stuff that’s not finished, but there will always be stuff that’s not finished. It’s an ongoing process. Someday, we’ll do the upstairs, but for now we are open.”

Once known as the Klein Opera House, the gallery is a historical landmark, and the art league kept that in mind as they remodeled the space from the sub-boards up. They have achieved this goal by leaving intact one of the original brick walls where the words ‘Henry Moore Gallery’ now stands in brilliant silver lettering.

The gallery opening took place during the Third Thursday event downtown, which drew many locals in to check out the new modernized space. Stark white walls and brilliant lighting illuminated gallery pieces placed throughout, and visitors did what art gallery visitors usually do –– chatted about the art.

The featured exhibit for the evening was a set of pieces by Art League member Henry Moore.

“He is one of our longtime members and one of our big donors, and he gave us that for our permanent collection,” Marcotte said. “And the rest of them are people who have loaned them so that everybody can see his work.”

Now that the gallery is open, Marcotte says the community can start enjoying the new space entirely dedicated to art creation and enjoyment. There will be large tables where artists can work, brand new sinks for cleaning up, and, most importantly, great lighting.

“This part of the building, tables will be right here,” Marcotte said. “We will have special track lights going across so that the students can have the right colors as they’re working.”

Open studio times are available for the community to use the space, and classes are set to begin on May 28. You can contact the art league by visiting their website or Facebook page for a complete list of courses.
