Christian Cupboard needs donations

Food pantry helping to feed people during virus outbreak

(Seguin) — The Christian Cupboard is asking the community to help it keep people fed during this coronavirus outbreak.  The local food pantry offers food to working families and others in need in the community.

Christian Cupboard Executive Director Regina Lee people in some cases are struggling to find the staples that they normally have at home. She says that’s why the cupboard is leaning a little more on the public for personal donations that can be shared with others in the community.

“People need to know that, if HEB doesn’t have toliet paper, then I definitely don’t have toliet paper. I’m a food pantry. I’m trying to feed you. Let it be known that if I can’t order it and get it from the San Antonio Food Bank or if I can’t order it and get it from HEB here in Seguin or Wal-Mart, then I’m not going to have it either. So I might be asking you to go through your can goods. And our hunters, who maybe had maybe had a deer or two, or a hog or two processed — I’m going to be asking for that,” said Lee.

Lee says it’s been made more difficult on some families, because schools are not in session. She says the school districts are offering free meals to their students, but she says the cupboard is also trying to step in to help bridge any gaps.

“As of right now, I’m okay with milk and eggs. Right now our shelves are okay, but I’m going to probably need your cans of tuna, potted meat, spaghetti sauce — those things, I might be reaching out for that at this point. As of today…I’m okay. I do know that the Seguin ISD has sites for breakfast and lunch, but think about the children who can’t get to those breakfast and lunch sites. However, their parents may come on their lunch time to the cupboard to have food to take home,” said Lee.

When the Christian Cupboard normally makes this kind of plea for help, it often asks for money, but Lee says things are different now. She says supplies are limited  in stores and that’s why it’s so important for you to see what you might be able to share from your pantry at home.

“Usually, I would ask for money, because it’s lightweigtht. Money is not helping me right now. It’s not really helping anybody (find certain things). So if you have a couple boxes of cereal that maybe you haven’t opened. If you go to the dollar store or Dollar Tree or Wal-Mart and you see a couple boxes of cereal, (bring it to us). If I’m not open, I have on the side of the building that (dropbox) that you can stick some things down. I really would appreciate it. I really do. Everytime I have asked (for help), the community has come out in force. If you have a donation, give us a call between the hours of 9 to 11:30 a.m., and we’ll make arrangements to be there if you need us at a different time. But I’m asking you to go through your cabinets right now,” said Lee.

Non-perishable food items can be dropped off at the Christian Cupboard at any time, by using the drop box on the side of the building. People wishing to donate perishable items, like eggs, milk or meat — those items should be dropped off when the cupboard’s volunteers are on site. If you need to coordinate a drop off, you can contact the cupboard’s office at 830-379-4857. The Christian Cupboard is located at 516 N. Camp St.
