Destination Imagination teams to advance to state competition

(Seguin) —  A handful of Seguin ISD students are headed to state competition. The Seguin ISD Destination Imagination (DI) teams have earned that right after competing in the regional event last weekend.

Seguin ISD Chief Communications Officer Sean Hoffmann says out of six teams, five teams earned an automatic bid to go onto state.

“The Seguin ISD is very proud of our DI teams who participated in competition in Helotes over the weekend and they are continuing a tradition — a long standing tradition of excellence in Destination Imagination for Seguin ISD. So, we have several teams that thanks to their hard work and dedication and the great job that they did over the weekend, they’ll be competing on April 4th at the Lone Star Finals for Destination Imagination in Arlington, Texas and I know the students and their parents and sponsors are looking forward to that,” said Hoffmann.

Teams preparing for state contest include a Seguin High School team consisting of students Gage Compton, Leo de Leon, Gracie Compton, Elizabeth Mays and Seth Kortz. The team took first place in Service Learning. The team also received at Renaissance Award.

Students Beckett Legore, Andy McDowall, Trinity Ramirez and Karen Ranft also represented Seguin High School and received first place in Improv.

Also earning first place in Improv was the Barnes Middle School team consisting of Eleanor Crettenden, Rylie Wilke, Molly Burns, Ella Kennington, Jade Ramirez and Clara Spencer-Dibble (of Patlan Elementary).

The Weinert Elementary team of Griffin Welfel, Laine McCown, Caleb Pape and August Panozzo also finished first in Fine Arts.

A team consisting of Ashton Baker and Lauren Baker of Koennecke Elementary,  Addie Dunn of Rodriguez Elementary plus Weinert Elementary’s Travis Just, Kooper Goodwin, Jackson Kirchner and Miley Burns also advanced with a first place finish in Scientific.

Hoffmann says the Seguin ISD also applauds its creative and critical thinking program coordinators for helping to continue the success of the program.

“We’re fortunate to have Seguin, the community support Destination Imagination and again, it looks like Michael Olstad and Pam Krippner have put together another great batch of students who again, will be carrying that torch for the district this school year,” said Hoffmann.

An independent team that also includes Barnes Middle School Student Addison McDowall also earned a DaVinci Award and took first place in Service Learning. This team will also move on to state.

Also placing second in Scientific was the Weinert Elementary team of Paige Leyendecker, Ava Martinez, Piper Perry, Allison Schievelbein, Jason Ranft, Raegan Ranft and Evan Flores.

Like Seguin ISD, a St. James Catholic School Destination Imagination team and Navarro ISD sixth grade team will also advance to state contest.  The award winning team from St. James consists of sixth graders Ariann Milan, Shyan Thomas, Casey Hernandez and Noah Rosas. They will be competing in the Engineering Challenge (also known as “In the Cards” challenge).

Representing the Navarro ISD will be the Fab 5. Team members include Taylor Brannan, Lilia Flo, Maddie Reinhard, Kyleigh Whitlow and Taylor Wyatt.
