CSP bringing 200 new jobs to Seguin; City, company breaks ground on $64 million project

(Seguin) — A $64 million project that will bring 200 new jobs to Seguin is now officially under construction. State and local leaders were on hand Tuesday for the groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the new Continental Structural Plastics (CSP) plant.

CSP’s CEO Steve Rooney says they are thrilled to be building their first facility in Texas.

“This facility is being built to address anticipated future demand for our automotive and heavy truck products. We feel we are very well strategically located to support our key customers going forward. We along with our parent company Teijin are investing at least $65 million to build this 200,000 square foot facility including all the internal program capital required and manufactured products. For employment, we’ll have as many as 200 people here both in engineering and manufacturing organizations creating world class advance and positive components,” said Rooney.

State Senator Judith Zaffarini, who represents Seguin and Guadalupe County, addressed the crowd on Tuesday morning. Zaffarini says that this is a great day for Seguin.

“This beautiful dynamic city so close to so many other parts of Texas including my hometown of Laredo, Texas but a place where there is definitely skilled workforce. A place where there is so many educational opportunities including Texas Lutheran University and a place where there are so many people who unite for the better good. We believe that Seguin is the perfect place for those reasons and more but we are especially proud to welcome a good neighbor, a new company in town who has a reputation and a record of more than 50 years for having committed to corporate responsibility, for being committed to environmental protection and certainly committed to having well paying jobs and for this, we are so appreciative,” said Zaffirini.

The state was a key part of making this project happen. State Representative John Kuempel, of Seguin, says everyone involved worked hard to make this a reality, and now the city of Seguin and the state of Texas both will benefit from this major investment.

“What a proud and exciting day it is to the city of Seguin, Guadalupe County. We thank ya’ll for what ya’ll have done, CSP, choosing this facility knowing that this community will come together and work with you as a partner going forward. As we grow, we need these jobs and we appreciate everything ya’ll have done,” said Kuempel.

Josh Schneuker, the executive director of the Seguin Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), was the local driving force behind the project. Schneuker says they spent approximately 11 months working with CSP and the state. He says the collaboration on this project really made a difference.

“I can’t stress enough how important collaboration is and how important working as a team is because we can not have landed this project in the state of Texas and in the city of Seguin without working together and the support of not only my staff by our board of directors, city council, the Guadalupe County Commissioners, the state of Texas, Senator Zaffarini, your office, Representative Kuempel, your office — everybody played such an instrumental role in helping recruit this project to Seguin,” said Schneuker.

Seguin Mayor Don Keil gave Schneuker a great deal of the credit for helping to see this project to fruition. Keil says CSP will fit right in with the rest of Seguin’s industrial community.

“This is a company from mainly based in Japan has come here, sells products worldwide. We have Continental Automotive from Germany so we have all these wonderful automotive electronics. We’ve got Alamo Group who has companies all over the world. It’s just so much from around the world. Caterpillar, over here, sends their diesel engines everywhere. The power of the world right here in Seguin and I’m so very proud that that has happened. It’s become quite a hub. We have more manufacturing jobs per capita than any other community in the state of Texas so we are proud of that. We make things here,” said Keil.

The ground breaking ceremony was held near the intersection of Eighth Street and Rio Nogales Drive, an area sandwiched in between Interstate 10 and the Niagara bottling plant. CSP is said to be a world leader in the manufacture of lightweight composite materials, including glass and carbon fibers, as well as thermoplastics and thermosets. Site preparations are now being made for the construction of the 200,000 square foot facility. The building is expected to be completed in 10 months with the plant officially going online in December of 2020.

CSP was acquired by Teijin in 2017. It has 50 years of experience in the industry, and has 4,300 employees globally. According to its company fact sheet, it has over $800 million in sales, and that’s projected to reach $2 billion by 2030.
