Longoria named 1st Team Academic All-District, advances to national ballot

(Seguin) – Texas Lutheran sophomore defensive end Manny Longoria is headed to the Academic All-America national ballot after being named to the 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District® 8 Football Team.

First Team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, with First and Second Team Academic All-America honorees to be announced in December.

Longoria was one of four defensive linemen to make the Academic All-District® 8 First Team.

CoSIDA and the Academic All-America® program recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.
Longoria is an education major with a 3.91 cumulative grade point average. He started all 10 games for the Bulldogs this year as the team went 6-4 overall and 6-3 in the American Southwest Conference.

Longoria was named to the Second Team All-ASC as a defensive lineman.

Longoria led the ASC in tackles for loss per game, at 1.5 per contest, and he ranked second in the ASC in sacks per game, at 0.86.

After making the move from safety to defensive end this year, Longoria posted 8.5 total sacks for 52 yards in sack yardage. He had 15.0 total tackles for loss with 71 yards in total lost yardage. Longoria had 35 total tackles, a fumble recovery, a forced fumble and a blocked kick.
The Academic All-District® teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada.

District 8 includes NCAA Division III college and universities from the states of: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Iowa, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Montana, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

The CoSIDA Academic All-America® program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and College Division. The College Division includes all NAIA, Canadian, two-year schools, and other affiliations.
The Division II and III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2017-18 DII and DIII Academic All-America® teams.
