Navarro routs Bandera, set to face Devine in bi-district playoffs
(Bandera) - The playoff bound Navarro Panthers finished up the 2017 regular season Friday night with their second straight win, a 51-14 road thumping of Bandera.
Senior quarterback Will Eveld completed 11-15 passing attempts for 164 yards and two touchdowns while also running 51 yards and a score, and returning a punt for a touchdown. Eveld, a four-year starter, has now established a new school record for career passing yards with 4,007.
The Panthers' passing attack has surged late in the season, with 379 of Eveld's 573 yards through the air coming in the last two games.
Tyler Law, Chris Gomez, and Johnny Alegria added rushing touchdowns for the Panthers. Navarro churned out 229 rushing yards on 35 carries. Nine different players carried the ball at least once, and none more than six times.
Eveld's completions went to six different receivers. Alegria and Stone Sahd hauled in the touchdown passes, and Alegria totaled 70 yards on three receptions. George Bradley added three catches for 50 yards.
Navarro built a 48-7 lead by halftime, and Efrain Alfaro added a 21-yard field goal in the second half.
Tyler Law recorded a team-high 10 tackles to pace a defensive effort that limited Bandera to just 194 total yards.
Navarro went 9-1 overall and 3-1 in District 13-4A-Division II during the regular season. The Panthers take the district's No. 2 playoff seed into a bi-district matchup with the Devine Warhorses this Thursday at 7 p.m. at Harlandale Memorial Stadium. The game will air live on KWED 1580 AM and Seguintoday.com, with pre-game coverage at 6:30.
Falcons drop regular season finale, finish with shared district title
(New Braunfels) - The Lifegate Falcons will settle for a three-way share of the TAPPS Six-Man Division II, District 4 championship after dropping their final regular season game to New Braunfels Christian Academy 88-54 on Friday.
Lifegate, New Braunfels Christian Academy, and San Marcos-Hill Country all went 2-1 in district play, with each team going 1-1 against the other two.
Lifegate trailed 16-6 at the end of the first quarter and 40-22 by halftime. The Falcons pulled within 10 twice, 40-30 and 48-38, in the third quarter, but NBCA closed the period with consecutive touchdowns to take a 64-38 lead into the fourth.
NBCA outscored the Falcons 24-16 in the final frame to pull away for the 34-point win.
Lifegate spread-back Cayden Shellnut piled up 407 yards of total offense, throwing for 303 and three touchdowns while running for 104 and one score. The NBCA defense managed to force four turnovers, though, intercepting a Shellnut pass and recovering three fumbles.
Myles McCord caught two of Shellnut's touchdown passes and finished with 167 receiving yards. David Brewer hauled in a scoring pass as well, and Barry Osborne totaled 64 yards rushing with three touchdowns and 63 yards receiving.
Barson Schmidt recorded a team-high seven tackles, while McCord and Osborne each recovered a fumble.
Lifegate finishes with a 7-2 regular season record after six wins and two losses in games actually played, along with a forfeit victory over Victoria Faith.
The Falcons' first-round playoff details had yet to be announced at press time.
