(Seguin) – The Seguin High School baseball program’s 2017 seniors will play their final career home game at ‘Smokey’ Joe Williams Field tonight when the Matadors host Kerrville-Tivy in District 26-5A.

With a 4-8 district record, Seguin (7-16) is no longer in playoff contention, but the 2017 season will be long remembered as one of perseverance in the wake of head coach Mark Williams being diagnosed with multiple myeloma earlier in the school year.

The Matadors showed resolve in their last outing, snapping a three-game slide with a 4-1 road win over Marble Falls after trailing 1-0 through six innings.

Tonight, Seguin meets a Tivy team that has already clinched at least a share of the district championship. The Antlers are 10-2 in district play, 20-4 overall, and lead the three teams tied for second place (Boerne-Champion, Dripping Springs, Alamo Heights) by two games with two left in the regular season.

Tivy run-ruled Seguin 10-0 in the March 28 meeting between the teams in Kerrville. The Antlers’ pitching combination of Asa Lacy and Ty Stephenson held the Mats to three hits that night – one apiece by Mason Mondin, Marcos Villamil, and Juan Rodriguez.

Lacy just threw 102 pitches in five innings and tossed a 10-strikeout one-hitter Tuesday night in Tivy’s 10-1 win over Boerne-Champion, so the Seguin lineup will see a different arm tonight. The likely candidate is the Antlers’ usual late-week starter, David Troxell. He pitched a one-hitter and struck out 11 with no walks in his most recent start, a 5-0 win over Marble Falls last Thursday, April 13.

With sophomore Cody Kachmar coming off a 102-pitch, six-inning two-hitter in Seguin’s win over Marble Falls on Tuesday, the Matadors have numerous options to turn to on the mound. The staff’s workhorse, senior right-hander Mason Mondin, only threw 25 pitches in one relief inning against Marble Falls. He comes into tonight with a 3-3 record, three saves, a 2.65 ERA, and 48 strikeouts in 37 innings this season.

Seguin’s offensive statistical leaders include Robert McCall (.388 avg., 10 RBIs, .483 OBP), Hayden Haas (11 runs, 11 stolen bases), Juan Rodriguez (11 stolen bases, three doubles), and Camron Gutierrez (two triples).

Tonight’s first pitch at ‘Smokey’ Joe Williams Field is slated for 7 p.m. The game will air live on KWED 1580 AM and, with pre-game coverage slated for 6:45.
