GRMC earns 5 Star national ratings in patient care

(Seguin) -- Not only has GRMC landed the prestigious honor of being named one of the best hospitals in the state and country but it also continues its success of receiving national accolades in specific areas.

Guadalupe Regional Medical Center has again scored top with Healthgrades during its 2018 release of prestigious awards for medical centers across the nation. Healthgrades is the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.

Rhonda Unruh, vice president of quality for GRMC, says in all four areas, the hospital has again earned a Five Star status. Continuing with over a decade's worth of success is GRMC's surgical and recovery team in orthopedics.

"We are a Five Star recipient for Total Knee Replacement and that's our fifth year to receive that. We have a great set of orthopedic surgeons here and our beautiful new surgical floor and our staff there is just great and (we are) a Five Star recipient for Hip Fracture Treatment and we've actually gotten that for 11 years in a row so that's pretty exciting," said Unruh.

Appendectomy procedures also rank as among the best of the best at GRMC.

"Then, a Five Star recipient for Appendectomy. So if you come in and have your appendix out -- are you doing okay, not having complications afterwards -- that's for three years in a row," said Unruh.

Rounding out the list of award recipients is the GRMC Birthing Center.

Unruh says the five-star rating indicates that GRMC’s clinical outcomes "are statistically significantly better than expected when performing childbirth deliveries.'

"Then Five Star recipient also for Vaginal Delivery for four years in a row. So, that's important as well and really the entire state is taking on a performance improvement project as it relates to maternal health and mortality and morbidity so I think that's pretty important for our organization to show that moms are coming here and they are having good outcomes," said Unruh.

In addition, to the four recognitions, GRMC has also earned Healthgrade's Patient Safety Excellence Award and Outstanding Patient Experience Award. The combination ranks GRMC in the top two percent of all eligible hospitals in the nation to receive both awards.
