(Seguin) -- Regularly spotting the American flag throughout the heart of Seguin during holidays such as Veterans Day isn't something that just happens. The purchase of those flags and their installation is a community effort -- an effort led by the Seguin Kiwanis Club. The club this weekend wants to remind individuals and members of the business community to help sponsor the individual flags that are displayed throughout Austin and Court Streets as well as around the Guadalupe County Courthouse and Central Park area.
"In years past, the Kiwanians placed over 300 flags in both downtown and in the area. It took six pickup trucks and 12 members to accomplish the task that took place at each major holiday. Fast forward to today, a smaller membership
means less manpower. As a result, the club focuses on downtown, putting out around 200 flags," said Club member Ed Engelhardt.
Sponsorship of these flags is available at $35 each, per year. Club members say the money collected is used for the group's charity work as well as for flag replacement.
The group is recognized for supporting a number of non-profits including but not limited to the Seguin Little League, The youth soccer league, the Guadalupe County Youth Livestock Show, the Boys & Girls State programs, the Navarro
Key Club and Seguin Park West.
Those interested in sponsoring a flag are asked to contact Flag Chairman Henry Hill at 830-379-8221.
