(Lubbock) -- Many Texans went to bed Monday night heartbroken. The story of a Texas Tech University police officer shot and killed at the university's police station sent shock waves across the state and across the nation. The name of the officer has not been released, but his death was shocking and sad. It was also a tense moment for all the students on the Texas Tech campus, including many from the Seguin area. The campus was placed on lock down while the gunman remained at-large. Folks here in Seguin -- hundreds of miles away -- took to social media to send well wishes to those who were there in Lubbock, encouraging them to stay safe and out of harms way.
But later that night, when it seemed that a sad story just couldn't get any worse, it got worse here in Seguin. It got personal. And when the the dust settled, the young man charged with killing the police officer, was someone that many of us know. If you don't know him personally, you likely know his family. The suspect is Hollis Daniels, 19, of Seguin. Locally, he's known as Reid Daniels. He's a freshman student at Texas Tech, who lived on campus.
According to reports, campus police made a student welfare check on Daniels on Monday night. The report says when they entered his room they found drugs and drug paraphernalia. He was then taken to the police station. This is where the story gets a little murky. Each claim ends with Daniels allegedly shooting and killing the officer, but some early reports stated that Daniels took the officer's gun and shot him in the head. Other reports claimed he produced a gun of his own, and killed the officer. He would flee on foot, and was later apprehended by police.
Texas Tech spokesperson Chris Cook spoke Monday night, and explained what they knew at that time.
"Upon entering the student's room, they noticed some drug paraphernalia and some other items. So they brought the student down to the Texas Tech Police Station, and had a debriefing, which is normal procedure. Sometime during that debriefing, the student pulled a gun and fatally wounded one of the officers. He fled on foot, and later this evening the suspect was apprehended without further incident," said Cook.
Reid Daniels is the son of former Seguin City Councilman Dan Daniels, and his wife, Janis, who is a well-respected travel writer. The family operated movie houses in Seguin, including the Palace and Texas theaters, for decades. The Texas Theater was sold to the Seguin Conservation Society several years ago, but the Daniels family maintains ownership of the Palace Theater on South Austin Street in downtown Seguin.
Texas Tech officials issued a statement Monday night thanking the Lubbock Police Department, Lubbock County Sheriff's Office and other state and federal law enforcement agencies for responding and assisting with the situation. Governor Greg Abbott also issued a statement saying that his heart goes out to the family of the police officer killed. He also said that he has mobilized state law enforcement resources to aid in the investigation.
Meanwhile, people in Seguin are praying for the slain officer, for Reid Daniels, and for the Daniels family that so many of know in this community.
