(Seguin) -- Don't worry about being shushed this weekend at the Seguin Public Library. In fact, the library wants you to do the complete opposite by cheering, all in celebration of its one year anniversary. Although its official anniversary date is Friday, September 8, the library will be opening its doors on Saturday afternoon for a full schedule of events some of them to include live music and free beer.
Library Director Jacki Gross says while the year has gone fast, it's been one of the best experiences for the community. Since it's opening, the library has already won at least a pair of prestigious design awards -- a state-of-the-art building made possible thanks to bonds approved by voters in November 2013.
"I think that the library, more than any other new building that might of come up in the area, it is just a pride for the community. We have residents of the area that bring their relatives here. This is like a tourist attraction, if you will. I think everybody is so proud of just what we've accomplished and then just the beauty of the building and the uniqueness of the building and I think it really has gone a long way to instill a real sense of pride in Seguin for residents to feel like 'yes. this is a cool town and we're proud of it and here's just one of the things that we've done as a community.' I think it's a real community effort and I think the community is proud of it," said Gross.
Gross says in preparing for the celebration, the library has solicited help from folks throughout the community. She says there will be something for everyone.
"We'll have a variety of events for the public. We'll have a local business expo. So some of the local businesses will have tables set up where people can come in and kind of find out what these businesses have to offer as part of the 'Read Local. Shop Seguin.' campaign. We'll have demonstrations as our new 3D printer. We'll have book character appearances, picture book characters from Mo Willems book Elephant and Piggy. So Elephant and Piggie will be here for the kids to visit with. We are going to have the adult coloring group and people can just sit down and color. We'll kind of cap off the celebration with a performance by the Dirty River Dixie Band from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m on the landing. Then finally, we will have the Seguin Brewing Co. ('Views & Brews') will be giving samples on the first floor deck of their micro brews from 5 to 5:45," said Gross.
Also performing Saturday will be members from the Ballet Folklorico De La Rosa program. The library celebration will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday. Individuals must be 21 or older to sample crafted beers. All events are free and open to the public.
Also as an extension of the annual "Shop Local, Shop Seguin" campaign, the Seguin Main Street Program, the Seguin Economic Development Corporation, the Seguin-Guadalupe County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce have also adopted a new intitiative in supporting local business by crafting the "Read Local. Shop Seguin." campaign. Throughout this month, these groups will be teaming up with the Seguin Public Library to not only continue the library's anniversary celebration but to also bring awareness to September -- also, National Library Card Sign-Up Month.
Customers who present their Seguin Library card to participating local businesses will receive an exclusive discount or offer. Some of the participating businesses, again, will be on hand this Saturday to encourage patrons to get a free library card. The Library is located at 313 W. Nolte St.
