(Seguin) -- A conversation with the Seguin ISD's new top administrator comes to listeners of this weekend's edition of the Saturday Topic program on AM 1580 KWED. Dr. Matthew Gutierrez joins KWED/Seguin Daily News General Manger Darren Dunn for a discussion about Gutierrez's recent decision to accept the superintendent's position in the Seguin ISD.
Gutierrez comes to the Seguin ISD after spending time as an assistant superintendent in the Plano ISD near Dallas. Gutierrez was chosen by the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees following a lengthy search process that included input from the community and district staff. Trustees say they believe that Gutierrez is the right fit for the district.
Gutierrez during the interview discusses his background, his experience in education and his decision to accept the superintendent's post in the Seguin ISD. Gutierrez says he studied and visited the district before accepting the job, and he feels like this is the right place for him to be.
"I made sure to do my own interview, and getting a feeling of 'how was the board during this process?' Going out in the community and asking questions and trying to meet with city leaders, and just asking questions at Starbucks and convenience stores when I come to Seguin. So I had to do my homework. And I also -- obviously there have been things that happened that have gotten statewide attention, especially in the education world. So I had to make sure that this was a right fit for me. But honestly, I had not started actively looking for superintendencies, and I've had my eyes on Seguin in the past and thought 'well maybe I'm not ready, we've got this going on in Little Elm' and I probably wasn't ready. I didn't have enough experiences that I think would've made me a valuable candidate at that time, and this opportunity did come up and I thought I'm going to put my name in the hat. I don't think this is one that can pass me up. (I thought) 'I got an amazing situation here in Plano. A very solid, well established high performing school district with a high performing school board.' But I thought, I can't pass this up," said Gutierrez.
Gutierrez also discusses his 90-day plan for the district. The entry plan is something that he presented to board members during the interview process, and it's something that many of them say helped to make him the right choice for the district. Gutierrez will also share some of his views on leadership and public education, and how the district can go about provide a top notch education for each student.
In addition to Dr. Gutierrez, listeners are also slated to get an introduction to another doctor that's new to the community. This one is a medical doctor that's coming onboard at GRMC. Dr. Elizabeth Beste is a general surgeon, who's bring her talents to Seguin. Dr. Beste is part of the growing medical staff at GRMC. She'll discuss her background and training. She'll also dicuss why she decided to bring her talents to Guadalupe Regional Medical Center.
The Saturday Topic program airs at 8:06 Saturday morning at CBS Radio News. Those outside of the listening area can also listen to the station online at www.seguintoday.com.
